    Yes.

Unfortunately I don't know exactly what "proper care" means in this case, but I think it definitely involves removing the existing rust somehow, probably with a chemical of some sort. The C&R subforum would probably be a big help there. After the rust is removed, normal everyday care should prevent it from getting worse.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

it's hard to keep up with things you never see and aren't that interested in. I was asking my mom about an old revolver I know she has (Colt .357) and asked what the model was. She didn't know, but she did know it hasn't been shot since the 80s, and certainly never oiled since then either. Not even sure it was cleaned back then. She doesn't own any gun cleaning stuff either. Just sits up in a closet. I was trying to drop a hint (birthday? christmas? Intra-familial? but now I'm kinda scared to see what condition it might be in.

OP - if you had used Corrosion-X you wouldn't have any rust/corrosion. I started using it on my saltwater fishing gear and was so impressed with its performance that I started using it on my firearms too.

Corrosion prevention compound, lubricant and penetrant qualified to MIL-PRF-16173E. Zero VOC and safe on electronics.

OP, next time you sell a gun to a friend, you should seal it in a vacuum bag with a desiccant packet first, so that when you buy it back from him a few years later it'll still be mint

Whenever I sell a firearm (which is rare), I make a point of never, ever wanting to see it again just for this reason.

I saw a once beautiful Remington Wingmaster in 410 with a vent rib barrel where the action was literally rusted shut. It was kept under a bed in a soft gun case. I know the humidity here on the east coast can be brutal on firearms. I always have plenty of moisture remover in my safes and it helps that I shoot often so I can inspect my firearms often.
