Sounds like the guy might have had an 80% homebuilt AK pistol with a brace, and the feds tried to run him up on SBR charges.
He might have been a straw man for the guns that ended up in criminal hands but it's hard to prove that. He did report them stolen. Gun theft is most likely perpetrated by those who know you have guns, and surprise, gun crime is committed by criminals!
Guy probably had a good attorney.
