    possible to ship ammo in a can?

    going to meet a friend for a BLM shoot. I'd like to pre-ship some ammo for the shoot. is it allowed to ship bulk ammo in a can (ammo can) via UPS? I've shipped ammo before with the appropriate ORM-D stickers, etc.

    i know the recommended method is to ship boxes, but I don't have that many empty ammo boxes available (guess I could scrounge the local range)

    thanks for any info you can provide.

    I have received ammo like that in a GI 50cal ammo can
    You might check with them but I see no reason not to do so. Just use Strapping tape to lock the release latch down.
    A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

        Not totally sure.

        Here's UPS guide:

        How to Package Cartridges, Small Arms

        Ammunition must be packed in inside boxes, partitioned within a snugly fitting outside box or in metal clips. Cartridges must be properly cushioned and protected from accidental initiation. The inside boxes, partitions or metal clips must be packaged in securely closed outside packaging that will not open during transit. The package may not exceed 66 lb. (30 kg).
        Kind of ambiguous. On one hand it specifically says "outside box", then says "securely closed outside packaging that will not open during transit."

        I'd say it's OK.

        Here's a portion of a CFR on the subject and looks like what UPS lifted there guide from.

        (2) Packaging for Cartridges, small arms, Cartridges for tools, blank, Cases, cartridge empty with primer, and eligible Cartridges, power device as limited quantity or ORM-D material must be as follows:

        (i) Ammunition must be packed in inside boxes, or in partitions that fit snugly in the outside packaging, or in metal clips;

        (ii) Primers must be protected from accidental initiation;

        (iii) Inside boxes, partitions or metal clips must be packed in securely-closed strong outside packagings;

        (iv) Maximum gross weight is limited to 30 kg (66 pounds) per package; and

        (v) Cartridges for tools, blank, Cartridges, power devices which are used to project fastening devices, Cases, cartridge, empty with primer, and 22 caliber rim-fire cartridges may be packaged loose in strong outside packagings.
        Stand up and be counted, or lay down and be mounted... -Mac

          Ammo can screams steal me. I'd scrounge some boxes to go over the cans.

            Actually I didn't explain very well. I mean is it allowed to put bulk Ammo in a can and then put can into a cardboard box to ship?

            What I am unsure of is the UPS ref seems to imply that you have to protect the primers from detonation - for example how new Ammo is packaged.

              Yes, the ammo can be in a can. Packed so it cannot rattle arouind and inadvertantly go off. Whole can goes into a shipping carton.
              Label with ORM-D sticker.

              or

              New Diamond-Shaped Ammo Shipping Labels Replace “ORM-D”

              The days of the “ORM-D: Small Arms Cartridges” labels for ammo shipments are numbered. The Dept. of Transportation (DOT) is phasing out the current ORM-D ammo labels, replacing them with a larger striped diamond label that does not mention “Small Arms Cartridges”. This change is designed to harmonize U.S. shipping rules with United Nations standards. You can start using the new “Limited Quantity” diamond labels for ammo shipments right now, but the new labels are not yet mandatory. You can continue to use the old ORM-D “Cartridges, Small Arms” labels until December 31, 2013. As of January 1, 2014 you MUST use the Striped Diamonds.

                I shipped a can with a belt of .50 BMG in it. It was the original container.

                I just taped the ORM-D thing on it and taped the latch. I bought insurance, which is cheap, in case someone stole it. No outer box.

                    Maybe OP is hiking to the shoot and his back pack is already full.

                      I have received ammo in a .50 cal ammo can.
                      The can was inside a cardboard box.

                        friend is in southern CA, I'm in northern CA. don't want my friend to supply all the ammo.

                        in any event sounds like filling up an ammo can and then putting can in box is good to go.

                        thanks for the feedback everyone.

                          CMP ships bulk ammo that way all the time.
                          Plastic bag filled with loose ammo inside ammo can inside cardboard box.

                          Use packing if the can is not completely full to keep it from rattling around inside.

                            Why not order ammo and have it sent down there? I assume you are flying, not driving.
                            UPS sometimes will rape you on shipping. Guy just bought a tin of Romanian Tokarev ammo off me. He ended up paying $80 for UPS to ship.
