Went to do a ppt for a shield at one of my favorite LGS, cencal tactical... buyer inspected the firearm and all was good, then noticed the sign on the counter, all ppt is now $45! BS! I argued the point but the owner wasn't there... I tried to go elsewhere but buyer was from up north so he didn't want to travel any more... they'll never see me inside their store again! Hate crappy service/extra fees for nonsense!

happens all the time, I've seen places say up to 100. It's very clear on the doj website what they can charge and they just add extra fees.

PPTs are a giant PITA that require manpower and resources well beyond the time you see spent by the clerk at the counter.

What was their old PPT price?

It is like this. If you are stranded in the desert with no other options, you can not argue with tge price the guy us asking for that can of diet coke.
FFLs foolishly think they are making an extra $10, while that alienates a whole bunch of customers who will not come back. So he made $10 bucks and lost the pitential of making thousands off you.
Doj does not give a rats rip if the ffl charges you extra. In fact they are more than happy if such practice reduces ppt numbers. Less work fir the guy who has to look and approve dros requests.

Where is CPRA and FPC when we need them. This is becoming more common. Back door fees and taxes, already a criminal offense, and the DOJ does nothing.

How much a month would you say you spend there ? Or in a year? Factor in the new CA minimum wage and needing to pay employees to do a job.

If that is your favorite LGS and your crying about the cost perhaps it's really not your favorite store after all. It is were you would be willing to support a local shop and somthing you believe in.

My favourite shop is not the cheapest I'm good with that there hard working people and there customer service is second to non and that comes at a price and I'm Okey with it.

Maybe you missed that whole point of the thread which is that its illegal under CA law to charge more than $35 total.

From the doj website below, notice it says dealers are REQUIRED to process transfers. The whole "it takes time and we don't make a lot" argument is stupid to me because you know you're required to do them. It comes with the responsibility of having a gun store.


Firearms dealers are required to process private party transfers upon request but may charge a fee not to exceed $10 per firearm for conducting the transfer. For example:

For a private party transfer involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00 for the first handgun and $31.00 for each additional handgun involved in the same transaction.
For private party transfers involving one or more long guns, or a private party transfer involving one handgun, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00. The dealer may charge an additional dealer-service fee of up to $10.00 for each additional firearm.

My favorite FFL is OC Armory. If the owner felt he needed to charge $45.00 for a transfer to cover costs I'd gladly pay it. If the PPT biz is really a loser the price should go up.

Just wait until the whole ammo shipping mess starts. Who really wants to tie up floor space and haul around tons of ammo and be responsible for its safe storage for a measly $10.00?

I'm sure all dealers will be charging storage, as they should.

The price sounds totally reasonable to me. Especially if it's my "favorite" shop. Matter of fact, I think that is the ppt price at my favorite shop and I'm happy they offer the service at that price. They do charge more to receive via mail and do ppt. That's fine. I'd like them t stay around a while. After all, they are my favorite shop (or two).

If they are going to break the law, they should start selling off roster guns and standard mags., etc.

Sell stuff that the Customers want for that extra profit.
After all, DOJ won't do anything.

Illegal? I mean, it's illegal, sure. So is selling a featured rifle; so far the California ingenuity has figured ways around that. But about the PPT charge, it's 10$ freaking bucks. How about when all the gun stores around you close down? Willing to drive 1hr to the next LGS? Makes it 2hrs round trip. Time out of your day, but hey, at least you won't be charged that extra $10.

It sounds like the real issue is that the state is, once again, meddling with the free market by mandating prices. This is in the same category as minimum wage laws and rent control where the government decides what prices can be charged and the cost of labor.
