    Boyds stock problem

I have been using calguns as a great resource for info over the years and was hoping to get some info. I know this is only my first real post, but usually I can find the answer I'm looking for on the forum and don't feel inclined to ask the same questions that have already been answered. But I'm kind of at a loss as to how Boyds handles warranty/quality issues.

My wife bought me a Boyds laminate stock for my birthday in 2015. It went onto a savage axis in 308. Stock was an awesome upgrade over the factory plastic stock and was able to get 1-1.5 inch groups with it. I was happy with it... well i took it out this last weekend to try out some lead free ammo and couldn't get it to group at all. 8-10 inch groups, figured maybe it was scope mounts, nope... receiver bolts, nope... ammo, nope (switched back to what I originally sighted in with and had been using). So I get home and decide to investigate further. As I was taking the front receiver bolt off I hear something fall on the table. Look down and there's a small piece of plastic. Get the receiver completely off and look down where the mag catch is and there is more plastic. The whole front "plastic" pillar had self destructed. I was just a little pissed that it was plastic. So I'm thinking of how to fix it, pop the plastic mag catch bracket out and am staring at the stock and notice that the stock has cracked as well. I've put less than 60 rounds through it and it's already failed.
    Will Boyds replace the stock?
If I send it to them will they replace it?
Or am I just SOL and have to use factory plastic?

Id contact their customer service. I don't see why they wouldn't help you out, id also recommend aluminum pillars. What do you torque the bolts to?

A call to Boyds will answer the question as to what they will do about it. I'll be honest and say they'll likely tell you your SOL.

Now your not SOL on the stock, with a little work it most likely can be fixed and improved. Pillar bedding it will make it so your can't crush the stock when tighting the bolts, and a cross pin through the crack with some epoxy should fix it. If your not comfortable doing this yourself there are a couple of smiths on this board that should be able to help.

You can also contact Spartan Rifles in San Jose. They do full precision rifle builds and your stock should be an easy job if its fixable

Thanks for the info and ideas. Just heard back from Boyds and all their going to do is send me a new front pillar. Probably plastic like the original. Guess it's time to fix it myself and do things right. At least I didn't have to wait long for a response and can now get my rifle up and running again.

Search youtube for Social Regressive. He pillar-beds a Savage Axis in a Boyd's stock with aluminum pillars he made from something he got at the hardware store.

I bought 2 597 stocks from Boyds years ago.
              The first came in warped.
The second came in worse than the other......

They were happy to take em back, no questions, no problems.

Are the cheaper priced stocks not on par as the pricier ones?
Are they using un cured inferior wood on the lower priced stocks?
