Traveling CA w/a handgun

Tough laws guys! But coming to visit anyway for a couple of weeks via SW airlines. I will be driving around the state doing most of the touristy things including Yosemite, San Fran, N. CA, S. CA but avoiding hi-pop areas except San Fran.
I am a licensed gun owner with a CCL and understand it means nothing in CA.
From what I have read, I can travel with my unloaded handgun locked in the trunk of my vehicle. Once in my hotel room, can I load my gun legally as long as it is in the room? Second thing, the standard magazine carries 12+1. Could that be an issue? Thanks for your input. Jes

P.S. Any good 'don't miss' recommendations outside the regular tourist stuff would be nice too!

Firearm can also be locked inside a secure container in the passenger compartment. A bit handier to get at that way. Also the gun needs to be locked in a secure container as you go from your car to you hotel room, so a secure container is in the cards for you.

Yep, this, or a lockable rangebag with a combo lock works fine for in-car carry. Just make sure the gun is in the locked (not unlocked) compartment while you have it inside the car. Seems obvious, but hey.

My advice:

Use a combo lock briefcase. Looks business like, doesnt scream GUN.

Pistol unloaded with loaded mags in same briefcase is legal. Just make sure the mags are not inserted into the handgun.

The briefcase can ride on the front seat or anywhere in the car.

No destination requirements when driving. When you're on foot you have destination requirements which would include a hotel room (residence) and
A camp site, work, home...Range....etc.

Once back in the car you're free to travel Willy nilly.

I (seriously) thought that the locked container device ( hard or soft locked range bag for instance) could NOT be within reach of the driver?

Also, this photo has one of those dangerous hitch bludgeoning devices too...I see people driving around with those hanging out all the time...

Not required no such law I usually place a copy of Mother Jones over the case

Just don't leave the briefcase in plain view when parked in SF or any other city. They break windows to steal anything in sight, even in parking garages with video security.
