    Possible Safariland ALS Issue

I have a Safariland holster with the ALS system. When in the holster, the gun has some up and down "play", about 1/8' - 1/4". If the gun isn't seated completely down, it won't release when the ALS button is depressed. I realize this could be fixed by more training & practice, but if this is normal, I'm wondering if it is a problem in stressful situations when motor skills are diminished.

I would think there should be a tighter fit given these are used by military and law enforcement quite a bit.

Anyone have this issue? I am using a Glock 17 with TLR-2.

Was it special order or did you buy it second hand? Have you tried calling Safariland about this? When gaining a purchase on the gun, generally one applies downward pressure on the grip and tang at the same time they disengage the lock. I could see what you are describing being useful for handgun retention in a gun grab, as someone wouldnt be able to pull the gun out of the holster by tugging upward on the gun and mashing the button, which a bad guy would think to do

Hi CouchOperator. I bought it new from Safariland, but haven't contacted them. I wanted to see what the Calguns community had to say. I couldn't find much on the internet about it, though I did hear from one source that the "play" is normal.

Have you seen the GLS holsters yet? They lock up on the trigger guard. I like them after I retrofit mine to the mid-ride UBL molded plastic duty belt loop rather than the flat injection molded one.

Not in person, but I've seen them online. I was mulling getting one of these so that I have a holster for a multitude of guns. Looks like a functional holster, sounds like you like it...

Thanks for the responses everyone. I've sent an email to Safariland and will post the outcome.

Well, I got 2 responses. I sent a second email to them as I waited over a week for a response to the first. I had sent them a second email since I thought my first email got lost. Here are the responses to both emails:

                      1. You should have some play in the holster. Enough to make a sound but not to cause a malfunction in the use of the holster. Have you tried tightening the tension screw?

                      2. This is normal, when you have it pulled up before activating the ALS it is holding the ALS down in your ejection port your first step should always be press the ALS then pull not the other way around, the movement is so that debris can fall free from the holster

So, stupid me didn't realize there was a tension screw. I tightened it and I haven't had any difficulty in drawing the gun thus far. However, there is still some play, although less. And if I manually pull the gun up, I still have issues drawing. I'm assuming since the "looseness" is gone due to tightening the tension screw, it doesn't allow the gun to move up as easy as before. I'll go to the range, practice some quick draws, and see how it performs.

Just got a another ALS from a friend last week. Well used. Tiny bit of play up and down. Not worried about it.

My ALS has up/down movement, no problems, seems normal.
ive trained with this holster for about a year plus and never noticed it.
Even pulling the gun UP, and then hitting the release the gun still releases fine, just with a louder click.
