Would negative feedback be warranted in this situation?

You as a seller, post an honest ad stating clearly the item is used, you send multiple photos to the potential buyer of the item in question making clear the item is in used condition. You then drive quite always to meet the buyer at the FFL and then they back out of the sale.

I lost out on gas and time. Would it be fair to leave negative feedback? Or only neutral?

I'd leave neutral if it were me. That sucks but I don't feel like they pulled one over on you or anything. I guess it would depend why they said they didn't want it.

As the seller I believe the buyer has a right to inspect the firearm first hand and refuse the purchase if he sees something he doesn't like.
I'd expect the same privilege as a buyer.
While it does suck that this happened, that's the risk the seller is taking placing the ad.

In the future, if you're going to accommodate someone (travel far etc) consider asking for non-refundable deposit, if they buy credit them, if not pocket it.

He didn't make a commitment to buy, and pretending that a buyer shouldn't be allowed to back out if they see something that might not have been clear in the pictures is absurd. At most it'd be neutral.

He could leave neutral or neg too if he felt you misrepresented the item.

I usually don't go too far out of my way to buy or sell an item for this reason.

I'm with Victor on this one. Its' really hard to see just how "Used is used" in pictures. Sometimes you get there and the slide is not right, or the cylinder is loose or who knows.

If it was a distance for me then I'd request a non-refundable deposit.
But, I agree a buyer has the right to refuse. Even at the last minute.

Yeah I get that. I don't think he's a bad guy. This transaction just put a bad taste in my mouth after years of nothing but excellent transaction on this site.

While it would leave a bad taste in my mouth I would probably let it drop. Unless stated otherwise buyer has a right to inspect. Neutral at worst case, but probably nothing from me. That said I would never deal with the person again.

Lesson learned OP Don't drive far to sell a gun unless a guy puts down a 10% non-refundable deposit.

(I usually always will refund said deposit once the gun sells if something happens, but it's up to you).
