PSA: Know what a squib load looks like.

Since I don't load 9mm, I bought a couple of hundred rounds of Winchester white box ammo for some general plinking today with a borrowed 92FS, had two squib loads out of 200, both lodged the bullet just beyond the chamber.

Make sure you recognize the "poof" and little puff of smoke that a squib load makes otherwise you'll end up with a mess. It can happen with factory ammo, too. No more white box crap for me.

Glad your are ok. Weird you had two in 200. Can you post the lot number?

This was all I could find on the box that could be a lot number. Though I think this is package identifying information. There was nothing that looked like a lot number printed after the box was originally inked for marketing.

There were two, 100 round, all-white boxes (top) in the bigger box. The 100 round white boxes had nothing different printed on them either.

Look inside the box. Sometimes it's printed on the inside.

Contact Winchester. Save the box and whatever rounds you have left over.

So did the follow up round run into the lodged bullet? If so, did your slide even fully close?

I religiously seek out inexpensive ammo and have never found white box to be the lowest price.

I've shot maybe 10K rounds and have yet to experience a squib. I think I'm prepared, it just hasn't happened yet.

Would a squib round even cycle the slide, 30 years ago when I first started reloading I had a 45 acp that had no powder, the lead 200gr SWC cleared the barrel and flew 50 feet down range, It did not cycle the slide.
I had to pull the bullets on 200+ rounds to check them all, I found 49 with out powder. I upped my inspections during reloading.

When the primer on the squib fired, it went "poof" followed by a little puff from the end of the barrel. The slide didn't move. Alarms were buzzing at this point so I stripped the mag, locked back the slide and looked for daylight though the barrel. None. Field strip, a couple of light taps with a hammer and a phillips head screwdriver on a 2x4 took care of the problem.

I bought 200 rounds for $42 at Academy. Probably not the best price, but considering I shoot 9mm only a couple of times a year, it was the best price I found for locally available ammo. I'm pushing 50 years old, been shooting regularly and competitively for more than half that time. I can count the number of squibs I've run into on one hand .. well, now two hands.

I reload a lot of .40 and .45 on a progressive. Having loaded A LOT of >= .40 ammo, I've only loaded ONE squib. It never cleared the barrel and the slide didn't budge. Same happened today.

In any case, the intent behind my post was to know what a squib looks and sounds like or the next boom you hear could start with a "ka."
