    Mossberg Shotgun

I'm considering getting my first shotgun, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Mossberg 590A1 - 9 Shot (Link: Model #51668)

What price should I expect to pay for a new one?
The lowest I found so far was $599.95

If anyone knows any store selling them for less around Santa Clara County, please let me know.

I would rather have a separate gun for trap/skeet shooting, if anyone has recommendations for a good beginner trap/skeet gun I would love to hear them.

    Guns are cheap

You will spend more $$$ on ammo
You will also spend more $$$ on a single 4-5 day class
    Than on the gun...

Get the gun you want.... if the metal trigger guard is worth it, then the 590A1 is better than the 500.

Big 5 in general has the best prices on mossbergs.... I just don't know if the stock the 590 or 590 A1
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I know some folks only want new (I'm the opposite; actually prefer used), but if you're looking to save money then there's nothing wrong with a used one, especially something as rugged as that Mossberg.

Found this one in about ten seconds:

590 is a rad shotgun. $600 is probably the going rate for new. Doubt you'll find many being sold private party but Id g that route if you do. Though, it may not be cheaper the way some people sell stuff.

          ><

For a first shotgun I would suggest a 500 combo package.

Reasons: the 590 is a limited purpose model. After the coolness factor is over and you have done a few mag dump, it will just sit doing nothing.

Learning to properly run a pump is to practice enough that you pump the gun instinctively while the gun is still shouldered and on target. Your in Santa Clara, you have 4 great ranges in your area to practice shooting a pump shotgun ----there are clay ranges along with rife and pistol and you can shoot more for less then what you would pay for buck and slug ammo. Just shooting once in a while, taking a Tac shotgun class and thinking you can actually run a pump when you will have to put shots on target is just kidding yourself

So I advise a 500 combo pack with an 18" barrel and 28" barrel with interchangeable choke tube and have fun learning. Its an all around package

I agree. Versatility > a couple rounds capacity.

Get the combo pack. Way more useful and you can shoot trap as well.

I got the 590A1. While I love the shotgun, and think it's worth every penny, it's a purpose built shotgun used for people. It's not very versatile. Slugs and buck are expensive so using it frequently on the range isn't cost effective.

I also really like trap shooting, but I can't find an aftermarket 28" barrel for it. So I have to now buy another shotgun. I would heed all the advice here and get a combo pack with the two barrels.

I love my 590A1. You can order parts like barrels by phone from Mossberg.

I love tha 590 but I'm not digging the price, went 500 tactical. It's pretty much the same minus the heavy barrel

I have the 590a1 and it really is a great shotgun. Put a Streamlight TLR-1 on it and had a red dot in it but went back to the ghost ring sight on it.

Truthfully, running a pump is not that easy and I'm not great at it. For my home defense needs, I am rethinking it and going back to the AR. Much simpler and more intuitive and effective to run....for me.

That said, the OP never stated it was specifically for home defense although the choice of the 590a1 makes me think it is.

I'm with the other guys that recommend the combo set. My friends that have tactical or HD shotguns never shoot them. Once in a while they rack the forearm while watching tv because it sounds cool.

I have sporting shotguns and shoot them twice a month. The combo set will let you do both.

590 A1 is a beast, it takes a beating and keeps shooting. The stock is a little long for some people like me but there are options for other stocks. The rifle sights are nice for slugs or buck, the more you shoot it the smoother it gets, I found the factory magazine spring a little weak so I replaced it with a different one a little longer and stronger and works great now. Its a combat/defense shotgun, not a skeet or trap gun..if I were to shoot that Id buy a dedicated trap type shotgun..but for what its designed for it rocks.

Lots of used shotties out there to be had. I picked up a Defender 1200 for 180. I run into 870 and 500s for the same or not much more. For the price your looking at you could get into an auto like a 930. Then once proven you would have an HD gun, 3 gun and a range gun.

What ever you get make sure you run different loads through it and make sure your confident it will run. Pumps have a following that they always just work. For they most part they do but I have had new and used that needed issues resolve before I would trust them.

The 590 is a good gun and has the cool factor. I would recommend a combo or picking up a used field shotgun as well. Most versital gun you can have is a good 26 inch field gun. You can hunt anything that walks or flys, protection from 2 and 4 legged threats and it's a blast to shoot clays. Enjoy

Shoot guns are addicting and they get expensive quickly start slow and figure out what you are going to want out of it.
