    LEO Inspecting Rifles at Ranges

I remember seeing some posts about this happening at a few ranges. Can someone point me to those or just list in this thread where they know this is occurring or has occurred in California? Not interested in BLM references, just commercial or public ranges.

A customer was asking me where it has happened and I couldn't provide any examples.

    Thanks,

I've never heard a credible report of local LEO's performing such a function.

I'd also be very curious as to what source of legal standing a local LEO would have to perform such inspections. I really can't think of one.

I think an officer who was at a range who saw a weapon in plain view is able to look at the serial number and configuration of such a rifle.

What do you mean "legal standing"? A cop assigned to desk work is authorized to pull over a traffic violator if he sees it at lunch. Do you disagree?

I'd be very cautious if my plan was to argue that the cop had no business taking note of my public actions.

Lytle Creek has forestry and i believe local sheriffs that will walk through and check everyone's rifle.

Haven't seen it happen at Burro Canyon Range at least when I'm there.

I have seen LEOs at a Range, but have never seen them inspect a gun at a Range

I heard of a magazine check at a Open Shooting area (Not a Private Range) where they were responding not a nuisance call.

Else, I've known of NON-Sworn range personnel checking for ammo and magazine compliance.

But never on firearm compliance as of yet.

A DFW Warden went down the the line at the Oroville public range (administered by DWR, managed by DFW) checking bullet buttons once when I was there.

                  This was shortly after the Sandy Hook shooting. I got the impression that;

                  1) The 'compliance check' wasn't his idea.

                  and

                  2) He didn't want to be there.

There was a video posted a long time ago on here of BLM officers in Perris asking to inspect the firearms. I tried searching for it on youtube and on here. My google fu pretty much sucks.

Yes, I remember seeing that video. It was a female officer checking for bullet button compliance.

I was contacted on BLM land (near Ocotillo) by a Ranger. He checked my AR's for bullet buttons, and he checked my magazines (capacity). This is the only time I have ever dealt with any kind of LEO that was a complete jerk. He was rude and treated me like I was guilty of something...I felt like I had to prove my innocence to him. He was rude even after he verified that I had nothing illegal. He made sure to mention that he had confiscated 3 illegal rifles that day (like it was something to brag about).

I was contacted on BLM land (near Dulzura) by a Ranger who checked my magazines (capacity)...He checked by loading ammo in them. I thanked him for loading all of my mags before he left.

I (with a fellow Calgunner) was also contacted on BLM (near Dulzura) by a Sheriff's Deputy that was responding to our location due to nearby residents complaining about "automatic gun-fire". I politely explained that we had no full-auto weapons, and he politely glanced at our selector switches and told us to have a nice day... (*note-bump firing is NOT full-auto )

I was contacted one other time on BLM land by Ranger Funk (I miss that guy) who was observing us from the hilltop and came down to thank us for doing a thorough range-cleaning.

I have never had any LEO approach me, or contact me in an official capacity while at an indoor range.
