    Transporting in Range Bag

    Hey all,

I've read a lot of previous range bag discussions, and I've read Librarians different faqs but I just want to make doubly sure #1 I ain't breaking California's ridiculous gun laws and #2 I buy the appropriate range bag.

Does the range bag you are carrying an unloaded and locked (the plastic case it came in - not the trigger lock) pistol in need to be locked at the zipper? Ammo will be stored in a separate pouch, magazines empty as well. I see a lot of range bags that do not allow for a zipper lock; surprisingly, only a few offer a zipper that allows a lock. And of course, the bags I'm most interested in don't have lockable zippers.

If I'm reading Librarians FAQs correctly, then the answer should be no. But being stuck in the state that is hell bent on taking as many of them away from us as they can, I'd rather know for sure before making a dumb mistake while driving to the range.

    Thanks all.

No. A locked case is fine. Carry it in whatever you want. You can put a lock through dual zipper ends of a backpack and call it locked. I saw a guy carrying once in a diaper bag. Best camouflage I ever saw.

Right. If you lock the unloaded gun itself in a case, you can carry the case in an unlocked range bag or other convenient carrier.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Ammo does not need to be in a separate pouch nor the magazines be empty.

        According to the Calguns Wiki:
Ammunition may be carried in the same container as the gun – loose ammunition or ammunition in ammo boxes does not make a gun loaded, because the ammunition is NOT “placed into a position from which it can be fired”.

You may transport loaded magazines and speed loaders, so long as they are not inserted into the magazine well or cylinder of the firearm. That does not make a gun loaded, because the ammunition carried that way is NOT “placed into a position from which it can be fired”.

A loaded magazine is not the same as a loaded weapon, and possession of a weapon and a loaded magazine for that weapon does not, necessarily, mean you have a loaded weapon.
When I go to the range I have loaded magazines and unloaded firearm together in my locked range bag so I can just enjoy shooting more and do not have to load magazines while inhaling lead vapors.

Lots of these range bags have a zipper with a big enough tab on them that you can drill a few small holes and insert a very tiny padlock. You can buy the tiny padlocks at home depot.
