    Handgun Vault Recommendations

Posting this in general for a bit more visibility (I hope that's cool...).

I did a couple searches on handgun storage solutions, and found a couple threads but nothing that I was looking for.

What is the consensus on best bang for the buck pistol vault solutions? I would be looking to put one in my car, and another one at home for quick access to my CCW weapon when not on my person. The one for the car I'd want to be strong and secure, but I would actually be OK going on the cheap end for the one at home as it is more of a deterrant than a theft thing. Anytime I am not wearing that weapon, it would just be in the lock box so that it is not sitting openly on the counter. If I was actually trying to secure it, it would go in the larger (real) safe.

Seems that most of the more budget-minded ones all have negative reviews. While I probably don't need anything super top-of-the-line, I don't want to buy something junky/won't last...

    Thanks for the recommendations.

Costco carried a Sentry pistol box during the holidays. It uses keys, combination,or finger print. It seems to be pretty well made and I think I paid less than a hundred. Finger print wise. It uses up to two print for two people.

I've read that many of the Sentry models eat batteries... like every few weeks or couple months. Has that been your experience?

No batteries, no keys, no bio-lock that can not read and the best part it presents the weapon ready to grab.

I have two of these. One alongside my bed and the other in the living room. Both are lag bolted to the floor.

I was leaning simplex as I like the battery-less design of an all-mechanical lock. Do you have experience comparing v-line and fort knox personally?

I ask because, to me, fort knox seemes a bit nicer but would love to hear from someone who has handled them both and can speak to the cost difference and whether or not it's worth it...

                  I have this sentry:
SentrySafe Pistol Safes protect your guns from unauthorized access and theft with durable solid steel construction and advanced locking systems. View Gun Safes.

Works well for me. It does eat batteries, replace them 3 or 4 times a year. It blinks to alert you when batteries are getting low. If you google for it, you'll find videos of how easy it is to pick the lock or defeat it by other means, so its not overly secure. Thats what my main safe is for. Good, cheap solution for certain applications.

Gonna pick up another just like it with the fingerprint access - I've drilled enough that I'm sure I could access in a hurry with a full adrenaline charge coursing, fingerprint would be much faster, especially for someone less practiced.

I have this Fort Knox safe and think it's great. The Simplex locks can be configured for very quick access and it never needs batteries. I don't recall paying $200+ however. Looks like prices have increased.

Edit: Just realized I quoted the wrong link. I have this Fort Knox version: https://www.amazon.com/Fort-Knox-Per.../dp/B015D82XAS

I have not compared them personally. The new V-line Brute is the same gauge as the Fort Knox. It also has hydraulic or gas shock to hold open the heavy door lid. You can see more about it here http://vlineind.com/ProductDetail.php?product_id=64

The rest of the V-line lineup are not as thick but still very sturdy. I'm sure you'd be happy with either brand, they both have lots of satisfied customers. V-line has low profile options which might work better in some applications.

I have all mine lag bolted to the floor as well. I have not changed a battery in my simplex locks in 20 years And they are very, very fast to open.

I have a Fort Knox, a Shotlock and a V-Line. The Shotlock & V-Line are good, and have done well for what I use them for. but... they look like a childs toy next to the Fort Knox, it is stout!

V-Line and Brute seem like solid construction, however the simplex lock may not be a good solution for everyone. There are only approx 1080 possible combinations for simplex locks. Do a simple search online and you can find lists of all possible combinations. A persistent teenager could easily knock out 50-100 attempts per day (while you're at work), until landing on the correct combination. If your aim is to prevent an intruder from getting to the gun, I'd say they are solid choices. A lot of the electronic boxes can be picked easily. Anything with a tubular bypass lock is easily accessible with a BIC pen or straw. Whatever model you are looking at, just do a simple search with youtube to see if its easily hacked.

                            FS1 traveler ?

Will this be true for the FS1-traveler?

Newer tube locks are not vulnerable to the Bic pen. They fixed them some time ago. Only someone using a real old, or cheap tube lock is vulnerable. The Bic pen trick has no chance of working on newer, quality tubular locks. They use them on slot machines.

Here is a vid I found for the Brute, there are some others out there too.
