    VEPR 12

I'm a newbie so go easy on me. Lol with all the new laws do I have to register it as an assault rifle. Second, can I make it featureless under new law??

    Thanks!

VEPR 12s start out featureless. The problem is, semi-automatic shotguns with detachable magazines are prohibited. So you need a mag lock in any case. Because there's a mag lock on the shotgun, the features don't matter.

Shotguns were not addressed by the 2016 law, so you don't need to register it.

If the un-finalized CA DOJ regulations get passed, then it would need to be registered as an assault weapon or modified to operate using a fixed magazine.

Wait and see, while the lawyers do battle.

I don't see how it can be registered as an assault weapon, because it was never legally possessed in the assault weapon configuration prior to 31 December 2017 (I hope). But I admittedly haven't been following the regs that closely.

Honestly call the DOJ and ask them they will know and they are a better reference than the forums

What has been your experience calling the DOJ with question like this?

Thanks guys. I hope Mitch is correct. I guess. I'll just have to wait and see. I had a guy at my local gun shop he believes this as well.

Vepr/Saiga 12's were never featureless because a detachable mag is an evil AW feature for shotguns

That's why even Monte Carlo stocked saiga 12's needed maglocks.

new laws doesnt mention, but the DOJ came up with their own underground regulations.

you have to register it according to the regulations the DOJ submitted to OAL.

however, CPRA is ready to sue the doj

I was not aware of the change in the DoJ regulations and was simply addressing the law as passed by the Legislature.

If the DoJ did indeed include shotguns in the new regs, then my comments above are incorrect.

So does this group it with all semiautomatic AW? If so does this mean I can make it featureless? Thanks again.

As Munkeeboi said, going featureless with a VEPR 12 doesn't help you because semi-automatic shotguns with detachable magazines are assault weapons, full stop. So that magazine has to be fixed, one way or another. That's generally how they are sold in California.

So here's what you are looking at:
                        1. ACCORDING TO LEGISLATION AS WRITTEN: you can have a VEPR 12 with a magazine lock; doesn't matter when you took possession; no registration required. Nothing changed with regard to shotguns.
                        2. ACCORDING TO NEW REGS AS DESCRIBED BY POSTERS ABOVE: VEPR 12 in possession before 1 Jan 2017 must be registered as an assault weapon; apparently DoJ is treating it like a rifle.
                        3. ACCORDING TO NEW REGS AS DESCRIBED BY POSTERS ABOVE: You cannot be in possession of a VEPR 12 from 1 January 2018 unless:
                          1. it is a registered assault weapon; OR
                          2. the magazine is permanently fixed to the receiver, which in the case of this platform would make it almost unusable.

Again, I am only familiar with the legislation as passed, and my understanding of the DoJ regulations is second-hand. But of the other posters in this thread are correct about the regs, those are your choices above.

If DOJ's underground regulations go through, no featureless for Vepr 12. You will have to register it.
