You certainly have reason to be concerned. But on the + side we all know the DOJ has been flooded with 1000s of last minute purchases and transfers. So you might be ok. Good luck.

Other than sending with some version of receipt signature required - registered mail, FedX etc - the acknowledgement paperwork is the only thing you have.

Actually, no, there is no need as a legal obligation.

          Law (PC 27875) says
          (3) Within 30 days of taking possession of the firearm,

the person to whom it is transferred shall submit a report to the Department of Justice, in a manner prescribed by the department,

that includes information concerning the individual taking possession of the firearm, how title was obtained and from whom, and a description of the firearm in question. The reports that individuals complete pursuant to this subdivision shall be made available to them in a format prescribed by the department.
So, if one picks the correct form, completes it correctly and fully, encloses the correct fee, and mails it to the correct address, one has met the requirements of that section.

I guess you could keep a copy for your own file, with a date submitted notation.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
