    Demilling an 80%

Buddy of mine screwed up royally on an 80% lower. So he smashed it (basically flattened it) with a sledge hammer and said he was just gonna recycle it. I told him that I thought that was a bad idea since IIRC the ATF says that it must be cut up into multiple pieces (3?).

But my google foo is poor today and I haven't been able to find anything.

    Anyone?

    Bueller...bueller...bueller??
    Sorry, not sorry.

Demil varies by firearm type and BATFE ideology of that day. The last import of M16 receivers were crushed with chunks of receiver piece.

How the hell did he manage to screw up milling an 80%? It's not hard, the jig does the hard part. Unless he was using a drill without a jig... "ah it'll be close enough."

Please tell me he sent you a picture of his screwup before he smashed it to pieces, I wanna see!
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

More often then not, I've noticed, people who screw up 80%'s usually do so by cutting too deep. Making the trigger pocket look less like a nice oval and more like a crude cave painting of a 13-legged spider.

I also saw one once where the guy tried to save some money by not buying a jig...

No pics. I'll ask if he took any.

His story for screwing it up was that he somehow canted the 80% when he was drilling it out. Which caused everything to be at an odd angle. The fire control pocket ended up opening up one of the detent pockets (I figure the safety detent), and when he installed the trigger/hammer he couldn't get anything to function. The trigger/hammer pin holes were also at an angle. And he says he got the pins in but he had to hammer the crap out of them to do it.

Not sure if he used a jig and set it in the jig crooked (of so I can't figure out how) or if he just decided to skip the jig altogether. My guess is the latter. He's never been a measure twice cut once kind of guy.

                    Sorry, not sorry.

I screwed one up by having the hand drill at an angle as I pushed downwards. Snapped the bit and screwed up the jig. Oh well, first ones went better. It happens.

                        I've screwed up a 80% or two.

Could it have been more screwed up than this one?
