Shipping ammo to LA County from Colorado

    Hey guys,
I got a few gifts from my folks while visiting home in Colorado but I need to ship them back to Cali and just want to make triple sure I'm not breaking any laws. Can my folks ship the following back to me from Colorado....I'm in Sherman Oaks (Los Angeles County - San Fernando Valley).

    -200 rounds .308

    -500 rounds .223

-Magpul accessories (Pmag 10/rd, RVG-railed vertical grip, MOE Grip, MOE Stock)

Is any of this (especially the ammo) illegal to ship over state lines as a private party? Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I don't want to do anything wrong here.

Sort of; County is not the issue here - Los Angeles CITY has ordinances/bans on receiving shipped ammo, and Sherman Oaks is a part of Los Angeles CITY. County is not an issue; I have had plenty of ammo shipped to my office in Beverly Hills.

Receiving ammo in LA City has been hit and miss for some. In some cases, it got held up or rejected, depending on which UPS or FedEx facility it came through. In one case for me, having it sent to Encino, it was held in Van Nuys for me to pick-up; they would not deliver it past that point - now that was odd, because I still got it anyway.

Others have taken the risk and it got delivered fine, no delays. Some cases, it got returned to the sender.

Being from a private source, it's not likely you will have any issues; and most of the LA City law references "vendors" but the shipper won't know the source. Because the package will say ORM-D on the outside of it, it flags handlers as to what it is and they may take the option of applying LA City's ordinances at will.

If you can have it sent to a place in LA County that is not also LA City, you would be better off (Burbank, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Pasadena, there are others - etc.).

      Stated HERE:

Usually goes fine to la city if address does not say Los Angeles, ca 9xxxx If parents sending fine. I get ammo in Canoga Park and North Hollywood and I know it goes to most other cities in LA. And fud on what shipping handlers ups or fedex think. Only vendors shipping have issues.. Bet Gleam never heard of shipper issue or document. Private party should be no problem I send ammo to myself from texas sometimes.

Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response Gleam. Unfortunately I don't have another place outside of 'city' to ship, so I think I'll have to take my chances on the Shoaks. As long as I know it's not illegal I think it'll be ok.

Do you happen to know if I can ship in a plain brown box or does there need to be any designation alerting the shipper that it's ammo?

Technically it's hazardous contents for shippers, so you need to declare it when they ask about contents. They'll likely stick an "ORM-D" sticker on the box.

And yeah, it will probably make it to Sherman Oaks without issue because it will come in through Van Nuys. Seems that if it goes through downtown LA processing locations is when the problems arise.
