Resources for Colorado

Hello All,

I've searched the internet for a Calguns-like forum for Colorado. However, the only forums I found had very few resources with very little information. So, I'm wondering if you guys know of any other resources for firearms ownership in Colorado. Specifically in regards to firearms laws in Colorado, proposed regulation, applicability, etc. as well as general firearms discussion (basically Cologuns).

Upon further review, they only have 1,300 members. Hmm. Ill look around and see what i can find but calguns is pretty unique in its size of traffic. Regarding ownership, i would talk to vetted instructors about the guns for which they specialize their classes around, i.e. Dont ask a ccw instructor about the regulations with AR's or NFA. Take their class if they helped you. Id definitely avoid gun store advice, but taking a peek at what kind of product is available is usually a safe bet that the item is legal in that state.

Forums for other states have low members and activity.
They don't have same drama as CA.

I lived in Colorado 1991-2006 and still have family there.

Colorado was too rural to support its state government crapping on gun owners until a few years ago - private sales not involving FFLs were legal until 2015, and regular capacity magazines could be sold legally through 2013 (now some gun shops sell them illegally in towns where sheriffs refuse to enforce the law).

Denver residents have squawked about extending their "assault weapon" restrictions to cover the whole state for decades, but their metro area still isn't populous enough to have the votes (that's California's biggest problem - over half the state lives in the San Francisco Bay and LA metropolitan areas, and there are other urban places like San Diego). Be careful there - historically they've had problems following federal law that allows transporting a gun between places it is legal. Other mostly liberal places are home to more libertarians that don't put up with that - Boulder couldn't pass an assault weapon ban, has a gun club within city limits with a 10+ year waiting list, and has trap shooting at its VFW post.

The rest of the state is mostly pro-gun. Short barreled long guns, suppressors, AOWs, destructive devices like 20mm semiautomatic Lahti rifles, and machine guns are all legal when they have a federal tax stamp. Concealed carry permits are shall-issue. In 1985 they passed the "make my day law"

CRS 18-1-704.5. Use of deadly physical force against an intruder.

(1) The general assembly hereby recognizes that the citizens of Colorado have a right to expect absolute safety within their own homes.

(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 18-1-704, any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant.

(3) Any occupant of a dwelling using physical force, including deadly physical force, in accordance with the provisions of subsection (2) of this section shall be immune from criminal prosecution for the use of such force.

(4) Any occupant of a dwelling using physical force, including deadly physical force, in accordance with the provisions of subsection (2) of this section shall be immune from any civil liability for injuries or death resulting from the use of such force.

Gun ownership isn't a big deal, so gun owners can keep to themselves when they're not shooting in public at a range or on BLM land.

It's not like here in California where gun owners are an oppressed minority that must band together.

Like most states, their grandfather clause doesn't require you to have possessed your goods in Colorado.

Unfortunately, prior possession is just an affirmative defense. You can still be arrested and charged.

OTOH, the law is very unpopular outside Denver. Some sheriffs said they won't enforce the law, and some gun shops switched back from selling rebuild kits to selling regular capacity magazines.

The house and senate passed a bill overturning the law, although it's been postponed presumably until former Denver Mayor and current Governor HIckenlooper is out of office so he can't veto. His term limit is up in 2019.

CRS 18-12-302 (2) (a) A person may possess a large-capacity magazine if he or she:

(I) Owns the large-capacity magazine on July 1, 2013; and

(II) Maintains continuous possession of the large-capacity magazine.

(b) If a person who is alleged to have violated subsection (1) of this section asserts that he or she is permitted to legally possess a large-capacity magazine pursuant to paragraph (a) of this subsection (2), the prosecution has the burden of proof to refute the assertion.
