    Question about gun registration

One of my buddies asked me a question regarding intra-familial transfers and the looming AW registration, and I couldn't answer it for him. So, the situation is: His dad bought 2 lowers for him in 2009 (my buddy was 19 at the time) and built them up. My buddy has had the rifles in his possession since then. He was under the impression that since long guns weren't technically "registered" during that time that he would be able to resister them as AW's next year and have no issues. In my eyes, he should have done the Intra-familial transfer a long time ago, and he may be screwed.
1.Will he be able to register them to himself as AW's next year as of now?
    (if not)
2.Does he need to do an intra-familial transfer now, then register?
    3.Is he SOL?

Registered or not, can't transfer to anyone, even family, within the state after Dec 31. Do it now and make the report to DOJ online.

Edit: whoops.. misread the part that son has had them in posession since '09. Therefore.. not a problem. He can still register or convert to featureless.

Pre 2014, intrafamilial reporting did not include long guns.

Setting aside the discussion of whether lowers are long guns, in 2009 there probably was nothing required.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

No paperwork required for father to son long gun transfer prior to 2014. DOJ has no record of ownership for these firearms.

I was wondering you would chime in here. Thanks!
