    Overall assault rifle length

I was told that I can legally convert ak/ar type pistols into a rifle just not the other way around. I'm assuming the same would go for the scorpion evo pistol that I own. That said, with the scorpion being 16" overall and the stock for the scorpion SBR being 10", once I register it as an assault rifle can I put the stock on it. The overall length for assault is 26" and obviously I would pin the stock in the open position.

If you wanted to do that then the barrel length has to be 16" and OAL has to be 30" before you can register as a rifle.

What about as an assault rifle? Isn't the overall length shorter?

For a reg aw, 26" in its longest config. Still 16" barrel

For CA isn't it the shortest configuration? OP the rifle has to be 30" or it is already an unregistered AW. Once a RAW the federal 26" length is the only one you need to worry about.

SB87, as mention, make sure the barrel is 16" or you will have manufactured a SBR when you attach the stock. That would first require a BATF tax stamp (federal) and a CA DWP (state); (neither of which is reasonably possible to obtain for the average civilian in CA).

Don't mix AW laws with SBR laws.

Registration as an AW gets you around AW laws. When it comes to dimensional compliance and pistol-rifle conversions, they are not affected by the new laws. Also, you have to follow both federal and CA laws. (Just understand and follow CA laws since they are virtually always tighter than federal laws so you cover both.)

It has to be legally possessed in 2016 in order to register as an AW in 2017. You cannot legally possess a semi-auto center fire rifle with an OAL of less than 30" in 2016 (unless it is already a RAW). So your conversion for purposes of registering as an AW in 2017 is a non-starter.

And then there's the SBR stuff that everyone else has commented on.
