What do they mean by "automatic"?

So I was looking at 2015 federal crime data this morning and noticed something weird. They have broken it down so that every firearm now has a row for "automatic". What do they consider to be an automatic rifle? Surely they aren't talking about AR-15s here... are they??

Just for giggles I asked my liberal neighbor (Berkeley) this morning what he thinks "automatic firearm" means. His exact definition? "Machine gun". Then he went on a rant about how many people die from them every year. I showed him the above data on my phone, and he just shook his head and said "you'll believe whatever they tell you so there is no point in talking about it anymore".

Funny thing is, I take his kid to the range with me once a month because he likes shooting my ARs. His dad comes over and begs me to take him shooting. Of course the libtard dad never comes with us. Oh well, hopefully I can get through to the next generation at least...

I don't know if I'm any luckier than you. When I told my dad that I bought an AR, he said "that's a little girl's toy rifle, do you keep it with your Glock 19?". When I told him I bought a .458 SOCOM upper, he said "that's a man's rifle, you haven't earned it and probably never will". lol... I stopped trying to figure him out like 20 years ago.
