Took a newbie to the range today

I treated my colleague to the range today after work. He knew I shoot and he asked me if he can tag along the next time I go. Prior to shooting, we had talked about politics and he's totally on board. He just didn't know the first step to the whole gun ownership realm.

As we waited for our turn, I went over the basics, primarily safety and etiquette. Reiterating trigger discipline.

I also emphasized that he can ask as many questions and not to feel like a dummy for not already knowing the answer. I told him that you're here to have a good time and learn.

I had him shoot my AR Pistol, CZ SP-01 and the P-01. I showed him how to operate each and to always aim it down range. If he had any questions, leave the gun on the table facing downrange and walk over to me and we'll figure it out.

I always get a kick when I see the level of confidence increase compared to the beginning.

Afterwards, he was pumped up and couldn't wait to get his FSC.

I think I shot only 3 rounds the entire time. IMO, it was worth the investment to get a newbie into the culture because I had no one to tag along when I very first started. At least now, he has some experience under his belt.

At the end, he asked how much he owed me. I told him to pay it forward and that someday; someone will ask him how to get started and it's his duty and responsibility to pass it along.

Right on! Good on ya man. A few weeks back I took a buddy of mine shooting for the first time, now he has a 10/22 and an M&P 15. Moving along quick hah.

Totally agree. I get a kick when I explain the basics when it comes to what they can have and how it must be configured and the caveats. I get the typically, head shaking side to side lol. Welcome to the dark side lol.

I have a couple of friends I'm planning to take on their first outting to the range. Some are neutral and some don't favor firearms, but I'm hoping I can spark some interest.

Thanks! Yea, he was already on our side, but didn't know the first thing about getting started.

With new shooters, we have to be careful because a good/bad experience will influence how they view firearms.

There's a video on the CG Facebook page of a woman shooting a hand cannon. That type of supervision, or lack thereof is what ruins it for everyone.

I keep it light and fun, while encouraging safety and discipline.

It's fun to see folks get enthusiastic. Invited a couple of acquaintances to my range a few weeks ago. 1 had purchased a Beretta a few months earlier and one had a fairly new SVE40 and a brand new AR.

The Beretta guy shot the AR for the first time and lit up .. couldn't stop smiling. Within 2 weeks he had built an AR built a 2nd one within the month and now has 3 lowers waiting. The AR guy shot my Shield and bought one the next week and last week bought a KSG Both are planning another purchase next month. They're hooked LOL

i tried to get my friends to go shooting with me. out of 4 of them, only 1 has bought a "firearm" after the trip, and it was only a stripped lower when the first AR ban scare was coming about 2 years ago.

none of them want to go further than going to the range and using my stuff. so i pretty much stopped inviting them.

Yea, that sucks, but don't get discouraged. Law of averages bro. Even Ted Williams failed 6.5/10 times (>.350 avg)
