    Grandpa's unregistered firearms

    Hello,
My grandfather passed away a while back and left me a few revolvers and rifles and more than likely they are not registered. Can someone please explain how to go about registering these guns?

OPLAW form and $19, and your good to go. You must have a FSC or an exemption.

There is also an on-line version that someone hopefully will point you to.

'Registered' is not a required attribute for a gun.

But documenting a transfer, which usually does accomplish the registration, is required and has been since 1991.

In 2014, the law changed to retain the comparable information on long guns that had been collected for handguns.

Remember, it's $19 for ALL the guns registered at one time, not each gun.

OP, if your grandpa left you a suitcase full of cash would you go report that too?

Jokes aside, the guys above me have already covered it. By the way, the $19 fee is a one time event for all the guns, its not per gun. Used to be per gun but we were able to fight that BS and get it changed.

OP, if you ever decide to sell any of those guns, be sure to ask the people on Calguns about the value of them before you sell. Don't just take them to a gun shop and believe the person at the counter. Some old revolvers can be surprisingly valuable. There are some great and incredibly knowledgeable people on here who will watch out for you.

Is it legally required that OP register those inherited, unregistered firearms? Can't a person legally transfer a firearm to a family member without going through the government rigamarole? My pops is a 20 year Marine with a nice collection that nobody but family knows he owns. I'd like for those to NOT be registered if they don't NEED to be when he hands them down.

Sorry, the new owner will need to complete the state paperwork.

If they're going to stay in California, registration via the OPLAW form/process is required by law.

Screw the state government and move them to a state that respects your civil rights. Then visit them ever once in awhile until CA CAN get its sh?#together.

How many gun owners do you think actually do this? One of these years I may get around to it myself, I suppose.

I don't know. I was explaining what the law requires. What you do with that information is up to you.

                          You could ask DOJ.

Now, it's true that the email-readers and phone answerers have difficulty with terms like 'aggregate', as
Me: 'I don't want any individual information, I know that would be inappropriate, I just want the aggregate number of people who filed an OPLAW form or reported an inheritance transfer, maybe broken out by year'.
R: "I'm sorry, privacy laws will not let us do that."
Me: "No, anonymized total numbers have no privacy implications, just like the crime stats DOJ publishes."
                          R: "I'm sorry, privacy ..."
Repeat until you run out of breath. Or electrons. Or the heat-death of the universe.

OP, never EVER trust gun store employees. If they ever give you ****, just take your business elsewhere. Don't expect them to ever educate you about anything. Most of them are straight up retards or just as shady as used car dealers.

                              Hello,
                              Thanks all for the feedback.
I don't plan on selling any of these firearms. They are nothing spectacular, just a bit sentimental and I wanted to make sure that the transfer was legal.
