Hypothetical Night Vision Scope

Assuming that you lived in a free state and had the funds for a dedicated night vision scope, which of these would you go with? 4x or 6x magnification? Assume its for coyotes/hogs/deer but if you want to add SD in there, knock yourself out.

My new brother in law is a noob but has lots of dough and I'm trying to decide on which of these I should suggest to my sister to get him for christmas.

Please don't get started on monocles like the PVS-14. I am familiar with them and I would like to keep this conversation focused on scopes. Thanks

I'd go 4x since it's for hunting. Should be plenty for most hunting applications.

I'd go clip on over dedicated scope though.

Clip on being a monocle that you just mount to a rifle behind something like a red dot or NV compatible scope?

Those are my thoughts as well. I've played around with a FLIR 'scope (RS32, IIRC) and it didn't work too well for navigation/house clearing, and looking out the window was like looking at a wall, but for hunting I'd much prefer it. Checking it out at the rural property of a known associate was illuminating. *ahem* Even at the lowest magnification, a feral cat at 100+ yards stood out like a sore thumb that was on fire. No, we didn't shoot it! Just looking around with the 'scope. BTW I loved the QD mount from LaRue that it came with.

My preference for thermal is biased by past experience, as I've been in jungle that was so thick that image intensifying GI devices were useless.

Not sure, but they live in Utah and I'm pretty sure theres way less anti-gun laws there

Thermal would be awesome but it's rather pricey.

Kansas has way less gun laws but NV hunting is still illegal. It's not anti-gun but rather anti-poaching.

Hope I didn't sound like I was blowing off your question. I never even bothered asking because I just assumed it was illegal here. Thats great that it isn't illegal to own NV scopes here! Doesn't really effect me though. I'll never be able to afford NV while I live here, and the second I graduate and get a job, I'll be out of this dump anyways.

But Im glad that you guys with more money can own them! I love having things to aspire to!

Possessing a night vision rifle scope is definitely illegal in California. See PC 468. 468. Any person who knowingly buys, sells, receives, disposes of, conceals, or has in his possession a sniperscope shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000) or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

As used in this section, sniperscope means any attachment, device or similar contrivance designed for or adaptable to use on a firearm which, through the use of a projected infrared light source and electronic telescope, enables the operator thereof to visually determine and locate the presence of objects during the nighttime.
