I like a pistol caliber lever

The 1892 winchester action is strong, lightweight, and very fast.

I use a Blaser R8 straight pull bolt rifle for hunting. It is only 5 rounds but I'm very, very fast with it.

Pump rifles and shotguns are pretty quick, too.

            Depends on the application.

            For HD, the pump shot-gun.

For target shooting a bolt action centerfire.

For plinking lever actions are always fun.

Time to find reruns of The Rifleman to watch. Starring Chuck Conners.

                    I realized I have a preference for semi-auto.

Four handguns, two semi auto, two revolver.

Three shotguns, one semi-auto, two pump

eleven rifles, one bolt, 10 semi-auto.

I have even gone to auto transmissions after 40+ years with manual.

For those of us that choose to not register and not own a semi-auto rifle, what is the best alternative?

The purpose is simple, you believe in the 2A but don't feel comfortable registering an AW and you don't trust that featureless semi-autos aren't next on their agenda.
California is eventually coming after everything. Get your semi-auto before its too late. There is really nothing that replaces a semi-auto. There really is no next best...it is a long step down in terms of capability.

Troy makes a pump AR style rifle:

Man up. Get a semi-auto now. You can always buy a pump rifle or shotgun next year.

What you state is not really a purpose for a gun, but a purpose to make a statement. You still have to define what the gun would be used for.

For example, semi-auto *rifle* ban doesn't affect, e.g., concealed carry. It minimally affects hunting - yes, some people hunt with semi-auto rifles, but they are not uniquely suitable for the task.

What you lose with semi-automatic rifle ban is something that is relevant to where I live - protection of larger property with limited neighbors and a lot of open spaces. Then, if you are an originalist, you also lose the firepower parity against agents of the state (police).

For property protection I would use lever action rifle for larger range (including animals) and pump shotgun for close quarters (the same as inside the home).
