De-registering an Assault weapon?? help needed

Friend has some registered AW's he's thinking of selling. Of course if they go out of state he must use an AW FFL. That's a given thanks to our silly laws. He's leaving the country so keeping them isn't an option unfortunately. I assume that there is a way to legally "de-register" a registered AW by removing the AW characteristic. Can anyone help steer us in that direction? We were thinking last night of what ifs.

What if he machined the threads off of the HK Tactical barrel? If we are thinking straight this would "remove" the AW characteristic and then it's good to go in a California PPT right?

What if he machined the threads off of the Wilkinson Linda pistol barrel?
Same deal as the HK Tactical? Nice rare pistol stays in California!?

What if he stripped and reassembled his Bushmaster parts on an OLL?
This ones easy. The new OLL would be okay to sell. The Bushmaster lower would remain registered for a rainy day, sold or just destroyed because economically it would make no sense to sell a $150 item through an AW FFL who is charging you to do the transfer out of state.

The Serbu BFG and the Steyr AUG USR seem like they have no solution.

There is another rifle involved but that's an easy solution. RAC M-96 Expeditionary, remove the pistol grip & voila! That one's going to make a trip to my safe as soon as we figure out the de-registration process.
    Thanks for your help

I think I'm going to name my future son with my exact same name so he can inherit my registered "Assault Weapons".

The Steyr USR is not on the list (Roberti-Roos). However it is AW by features. You can add a Raddlock and make it California compliant if you use a 10 round mag.

Raddlock makes a lock for that eh? My friend does have a ten round mag for it. Now things are getting interesting. I'm still searching trying to find how to de- register with the DOJ.

Unless he's never coming back he should just keep them locked in a safe at a friends house that no one else has access to. Once he gets rid of them, he can never get them back.

I know a guy that sold an AK and Tec-9 because he was moving out of the country, only to move back a few years later and seriously regret it.

If he leaves the country, which is pretty certain,

                he ain't ever coming back,

Radd makes a lock for the USR. Just need to file the legs a little bit at a time for a perfect fit. I got mine from Lanworld. Radd makes a special kit for the USR that is slightly different than the one for MSAR.

                    It works as advertised.

De-registering. I think you need to send a letter to DOJ saying that the rifle is rendered as a non-AW and you would like to de-register it.

Instead of taking off the threads of the HK, just remove the barrel and replace with another that doesn't have them. Keep the threaded barrel separate in case you move out or want to sell it out of state.
