    AR15 Barrels ?

Looking too build my first upper from scratch. I've built lowers before and bought complete uppers too go with them.

Barrel question, I see different barrels listed for .223 Wylde. are they chambered for .223 only and not for 5.56?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

      There are technically 3 types of barrels;
      .223
      5.56
      .223 wylde

      A .223 cannot shoot 5.56
5.56 and .223 wylde can shoot both calibers.

      Best of luck.

They shoot both, The chamber is designed a little different to provide better accuracy from 5.56 ammo from what I recall.

.223 Wylde can shoot both .223 rem and 5.56 nato.

I would recommend a 5.56 barrel. They are not that much more than a .223 barrel and wylde barrels are kind of hard to come by. Just make sure you're barrel has m4 feed ramps.

              There are other chambers too

a .223 can shoot 5.56, it just isn't a good idea due to risk of overpressure

In the real world you will probably see no difference between 5.56 chambers and .223 Wylde chambers.

                  Wrong.

A .223 will have higher pressures that a 5.56 chamber, but that does not mean it cannot shoot it.

5.56 is not a SAAMI cartridge, so there are no specs for it.

.223 Wylde is the same as .223 for all intents and purposes but will handle the higher 5.56 pressures.

An article on Luckygunner puts it better than I can:

The exterior (physical) dimensions of .223 and 5.56 ammunition are effectively identical.
5.56 ammunition may be loaded to higher pressures than .223 ammunition.
5.56mm chambers are dimensionally larger in certain critical areas than .223 chambers.
Given the same ammunition, 5.56 chambers will have lower pressures than .223 chambers.

                  Read the rest here:

I have used a lot of different brand barrels. If I went to buy a generic AR barrel today I would buy a Black Hole Weaponry or Criterion barrel. Both will shoot better than most people can get them to.
