Don't neglect those springs!

I just replaced op springs and magazine springs in several firearms. I was amazed to see how compressed the old springs were that I took out. The firearms functioned fine before but a little preventive maintenance is a good idea.

I also bought a complete spring kit to replace everything in my Mauser/Interarms HSc .380 pocket pistol. I plan to use it as my CCW when I move to NC in a couple of years.

If the firearms function fine.... Then what makes the springs bad again?

My HD magazines are loaded 24/7/365 and sure they are easiest to load at the range but that doesn't mean they are wearing out

If the springs are approaching the end of their life, it's generally better to replace them a bit early, rather than wait until it's too late...especially on a defensive gun. If it's just a range gun, no big deal.

Leaving mags loaded doesnt wear out springs. Constant and continuous compression and expansion is what wears springs out.

Springs do have recommended replacement intervals from the manufacturer/designer.

I believe the AR buffer spring is recommended at like 5k.

My 1911 recoil spring says 1500 rounds in the manual, glock says like 6k..

Probably doesn't need it. But springs are cheap enough that if your the type who wants to keep it fresh it won't break the bank. Same with oil for your vehicle. Every few K in my glock i'll replace springs. Its literally only a few bucks to change majority of them with OEM, gives me an excuse to strip it bare frame, clean it, lube it etc etc. Like a brand new gun again

Springs have an initial set in period, manufacturers account for that. I wouldnt be worried by a compressed spring. I would change them at the round counts that the manufacturer reccomends, pretty cheap insurance especially for a defensive firearm.

I rotate my loaded pistol mags out every few months and take the tension off.
Replacing with another set of mags so there not compressed for years.
It's just my way and what I do.
