    What defines a "locked" case?

Instead of using the gun case my pistols come in I use a foam case I buy at the range for $10. It holds more than the regular plastic cases and doesn't scratch the guns.

My question is about how locked should the case box be? With the case locked I can still remove the pistol by bending the case open. Is this still legally a "locked" case?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Not if you can remove it with the case locked.

Why test it? Just go get a decent locking case. I bought one at a gun show and it holds 3 handguns with room for multiple mags. For about $60 and i have the peace of mind.

Locked means something that cannot be accessed without unlocking or removing the lock.

Like your locked in a prison cell, but your technically not LOCKED UP if you can squeeze through the bars.

          Thanks,

I'll switch my cases back to the manufactures cases. Seems the only way to fully lock my aftermarket cases is with two large padlocks, making the case even harder to carry in a bag.

How about this - we lock the plastic case (two padlocks) and the key is on a bungee dangling from the case. It is "locked" and yet readily accessible. I had someond raise their eyebrows at this once, said "that's not very secure". I answered "It doesn't need to be secure, it's a plastic box and it never leaves my side. If anyone ever got it, key or no, they could have it open in 30 seconds with a good pocket knife anyway. It doesn't need to be secure, just as long as it's legal."

Is it still considered locked if the key is in the lock but not turned?
