7.62 x 54r ammo buy

Wanting to buy some Hornady or Winchester before the 1st. I'm wondering if they use .311 bullets? Anyone mic it? I can't find anywhere what Hornady is loading with or even if it's boxer primed. It does list steel case for Hornady.

Just don't want to buy .308 diameter in a large quantity.

I never really put that much thought in to buying ammo to then measure them.
If they sell you 7.62x54R and you get them and they look like 7.62x54R and the box is marked the same, I'd say your good to go.
Winchester doesn't even state that information on their website.

Both Hornady and Winchester only offer one round in that caliber from each manufacturer and the bullet size is not listed, you might be able to use the "contact us" link and put that question to them.

Winchester's used to be made by S&B, was boxer primed, I presume the bullet was 0.310".

I'd suggest going with PPU if you are looking for the "tried & true" solution. The Hornady would be great if it was brass cased, but since it is steel, no thanks. Winchester is decent stuff, and they actually offer 2 different loadings- SP and FMJ. I have some in the shop but I haven't shot it in years and do not recall what the bullet diameter was.

You can get a 500 round case of PPU for 65 cents per round at SGAmmo.com and you will end up with usable brass cases that will last you quite a while. Don't bother going with the PPU match, as it is not worth the extra cost.

But is it .308 .310 or .311? That's the problem with that round. I've gotten some really accurate Hornady and never thought to mic it but now with these ridiculous laws coming I'm going to reload after shooting them once but want to match what they are using because I like the results. Eventually I'll slug the bore I just want to know what diameter the commercial guys use. I shot all that I had before the idea of these stupid laws even came up.

Been shooting old hardball since but since the State won't let me sell the rifle by delisting it, it may be my new deer gun.

Took one out and put a micrometer to it, measured 0.3115

I've never really paid much attention to what size bullets they showed, as they don't show what the bore diameter was of the barrel they shot it from, so it really is of no help.

If you know the groove size of your barrel, use correctly matched projectiles and work up a load using whatever data you trust as a starting point.

If you don't have access to the quickload program, there are quite a few members here (including me) that would be willing to run your powder & bullet in QL so you can find a good starting point.

I've loaded a minimum of 100 rounds of 7.62x54r per month for the past 10+ years, so I've got some pretty good experience with this cartridge

7.62x54R spam can ammo has been loaded with bullets of 0.311 diameter for about 50 years that I can tell. I have some 1950s Bulgarian 7.62X54R brass cased non magnetic ammo that shoots great.

.303 Brit and 765 Argentine = 0.311 bullet diameter since the Jurassic Era. By now you'd think the websiter builder people might get the 0.311 news.

Ok, guy was nice enough to let me mic a box of ppu 150 grainers. Yep, .311 so I'm going to start a shipment of PPU as I like the brass. Then load with 46 grains of H4895 and ladder it up maybe a grain total as this old girl doesn't need to be hot. I've seen some notes of others shooting a Romak/PSL with that load.

Crazy you can buy the ammo for about the same price as the brass. Thanks for the input guys.

Talked to the guys at IMR and they said the "test rifle" they used for 7.62 x 54r slugged at .308 so that's why the data says .308 vs .311 but the load data for both would be the same. I'd think a .311 bullet in a .308 barrel would have much higher pressures. Really odd as I think it would be difficult to find a Mosin or Romak in .308 unless it's based on the winchester round. They also just sell some powders to some of the makers but apparently don't have any connection to charge weights etc which didn't surprise me. Nice guys.
