OK ? WTH is going on in the 1911 game ?

So, only " custom " $1,700 dollar and up - 1911's are gtg?

In the Larry Vickers video ( on what looks like Wilson 1911's ), I saw a stoppage ( in that video ).

    So, what gives - are the only good 1911's the MC Operator ( $1,200 ), TRP ($1,600 ), or CZ Valors ( $1,800 ) ?

According to those videos, when 1911's are used they tend to break down.

The Military issued 1911's, but they were not built like the Wilson, Ed Brown models.

Personally, I bought a Springfield Armory 1911 ( circa 1990 ), that I had throated and polished - and it would start to jam with hardball ammo ( after 150-300) rounds, so that ended my 1911 buys.

    Opinions ?

    EDIT: Also see

A wishlist of modifications we'd push for if we could determine what tweaks to make to the legendary 1911 for service use.

And if someone can find that Hilton Yam article about his journey away from the 1911 I'd like to reread that. ModernServiceWeapons apparently deleted all his articles

Its true. If you cant afford a semi custom, buy a glock and save yourself the headache. The truth hurts but it is what it is. You cant be a cheapass in the 1911 world. I recommend Wilson Combat as the starting point.

              Bull pucky.

I have several that malfunction about as frequently as my Glocks, XD's and others.

Heck I had a 'bargain' Charles Daly 1911 that was a tank!
Damn thing never gave me a malfunction ever, I traded it to my BiL for a Commander length Charles Daly that I had bobtailed.

I shot a bunch of matches in CO with a .mil fellow using a RIA 9mm 1911. Even though he was single stack in a doublestack world he did well. Never had an issue I saw. He probably did about 200 rounds per match.

I am on the lookout for a RIA/ Pantera 2011 right now..

Only time I've ever had a problem with a 1911 was my own fault. Lack of cleaning (not an HD gun) lead to a few FTE. A little lube fixed it until the cleaning.

                    YMMV.

Oh god, not another James Yeager video.

That dude is probably the biggest blowhard out there on youtube when it comes to firearms and not knowing a damn thing. Hell, even if he or anyone in his videos was correct, they automatically lose all credibility simply by being in a James Yeager video. Unless you think it's OK to have camera men down range standing next to targets during live fire in a class, get called out on it, and defend it by proclaiming how badass the camera man and beginner students are.

I have a $500 RIA that people look down on all the time. It is a very early RIA that did have to have the mag release updated (free from RIA) and I polished the face and feed ramp. Runs like a clock now. Last time I took it to the range a guy wanted to show off his nighthawk custom to me and how cool the fit and finish was on his. And I understand some people want to do zero "gunsmithing" like that to correct any reliability issues, but then they have no grounds to complain about $2000 1911's because thats what the manufacturer is doing; hand smithing parts to ensure it works.

I love the 1911, but have always been confused - first they say the GI 1911 is the better pistol, and then you get someone that says - only $1,500 dollar 1911's will run right.

I would love to have a $3,000 dollar Wilson / Ed Brown / Nighthawk, but in the end ( and what it really comes down to ), is a firearm that's RELIABLE.

                            Thanks Kestryll ~

The 1911 was designed at a time where craftsmen...real people...were still building guns. Accordingly it doesn't always lend itself well to modern production techniques (ie automation with no hand fitting). There are several mfgs who have figured out how to deal with this and turn out pretty consistently good 1911's. Companies like Springfield, Rock Island, Sig, etc. Pick a company with a good reputation for both quality and service and you should be fine.
