DL address incorrect & long guns?

My DL address is not current, and I am planning on buying a couple rifles. Do they actually do anything with the address (send you paperwork, etc) or is it just a technicality? I have not bought a gun before, just done a lot of borrowing, so I don't know how it works.

    DA's website says:

As part of the DROS process, the buyer must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
I read through the handgun threads on residence, but they are more about whether you can get a gun, and not what they do with the address. Do they send you registration or anything at the listed address?

    Thanks

My address on the DL is a PO pox. I've never had any problems, just provide a proof of residency document (PG&E bill, car insurance, etc...)

Same issue here, so I just flipped the DL over and wrote the new address on the back. There's a place for it. Been working fine for two years, now.

My regular FFL is happy with that, and photocopies both sides.

If you go for the cheapest DROS you can find, you may not be so lucky.

I had that issue in the past...most places are fine as long as you write the current address on the back of the DL...I bought several guns that way, until one retailer filed the change of address w/ the DMV for me!

If the DROS is submitted, and the information does not match DMV records, it will likely be rejected. (PO Boxes are a different story I think, I've done alot of DROS'es where the applicant had a PO Box on the DL, but filled out the DROS with the physical address) If it gets rejected, you will have to start the entire process again. Legally speaking, you could not fill out the DROS Worksheet or 4473 with your old address to circumvent this, as it requires that you fill in your current residential address. Additionally, if your Drivers License does not reflect your current address, the NEW yellow 4473 requires a secondary form of governmentally issued residency verification. Take your vehicle registration, W2 form, something that has your current residence address.. Even on a long gun.

+1. For a few years I DROSed numerous guns with my change of address noted on the back of my CDL. Worked fine. Never rejected.

Ok, thanks everybody. I have a motorcycle registration that is current, but the DMV saved $0.001 by sending it in an envelope without plastic in the window, and most of the address rubbed off

Hopefully they will accept it in that condition.

or, you can goto the DMV and get a "change of address form". Fill it out, and then they give you a little card--good for 30 or 90 days.

Using this card is *in* the PC somewhere.... Just an FYI.

I had to do this at Turners once...I know...I know... I was 21 and it was my first pistol. I never have used Turners since...

ETA: AAA has the form/card too...If you are a member.

I stopped by the shop, bought some ammo for my loaner gun (I hate leaving a gun shop empty handed) and asked about the DROS and the guy said "doesn't matter, just put your current address on the form" and that they do it all the time.

Guess I picked the right shop lol

You only need to show your CA ID/DL for a long gun purchase, they only need proof of residency if you buy a handgun.

Only if your CA DL/ID has your current street address on it.

The new 4473 requires proof of residency if your DL/ID has an old address or a P.O. Box (line 20b.)

Well I guess you can do the change of address on the DMV website and printout the confirmation page. At least I would hope so.

You can use almost anything. Just has to be a government issued document with your name and address on it. An official DMV change of address card/print out will do.
