Advice on Training in the Sacramento Area

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and am looking for recommendations for training the Sacramento area. I've been researching a number of companies and have found that pricing, offerings, and opinions vary widely. This morning I came across this company: http://traintosurvivetactical.com/handgun-training/

They have 5 stars on Yelp, but only a handful of reviews. Has anyone used them? If so, what do you think? They've got a promotion going for 3 classes for $350, which is an attractive deal, but only if the training is good.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Welcome to the forum. Are you the same poster in the XDtalk forum?
As far as training, I don't have any personal recommendation outside of FS. However, one thing to consider on top of the cost of the training class is the required gear. A GOOD holster, GOOD sturdy gun belt, mag pouch and of course ammo.

There's a training sub forum here too. But, a lot of those guys are pretty hard core.

One thing to keep in mind with most classes is that if you go from school to school, you will need to start at the beginner course again. You can't take a beginner class at company A and then jump to advanced at company B.

Enjoy your journey! Let us know what you decide.

    Happy shooting and be safe.

Hello! I am indeed the very same person. In fact, I'm picking up my new XD this afternoon. I thought long and hard about the Front Sight offer. While it did seem like a great option I decided not to because 1)it's in Las Vegas, which is a bit too far for me to get to on a regular basis, and 2) I'm really interested in something my wife and I can go through together. We're starting with the one XD for now, but if she's as into it as she seems now, I'm going to order a 2nd XD so we can both use them.

This company seems solid, but they do use simunition, which I've been reading about, and it seems to really gum up the barrel on the gun. it looks like you need to use their guns for it as well, so we wouldn't get much practice with our own.

      I'll continue my research.

      Thanks!

what kind of training are you interested in? defensive handgun, defensive rifle, etc?

travis haley's class is good, i think he will be in coalinga next month. he does rifle and handgun training. pat mac is in norcal at the end of the year i believe.

just subscribe to bcm, haley strategic, etc for mailers on times they will be in your area. i took costas classes on rifle and handgun and they were fun. haley's is supposed to be good as well.

check these guys out too, they are supposed to be very good: https://www.facebook.com/KAGWERKS/

Thanks very much for the suggestions, I'll check them out!

I've been a shooter on and off for most of my adult life, but I've never had formal training. My wife took an introduction to handguns class a couple of years ago and loved it. So I'm looking for something that we can do together, starting with the basics and going through to defensive shooting.

          Thanks again!

Hey XD! For a husband and wife team, I strongly suggest front sight for training. You can buy a lifetime membership for the two of you for a very reasonable price and go as many times as you like. Yes Pahrump is far, but it turns out to be a very nice vacation for the two of you. It did from me and my wife. Check out the student of the month videos on YouTube from front sight. It will give you a peek into their training. Accommodations are also inexpensive. Check out saddle west. They also facilitate gun and ammo rentals. Front site is very female friendly. All of their instructors are very very good.

Again, it goes back to the type of training you are interested in. For basic gun safety, home defense type of training front side is very good. There are a lot of other training schools in your area that will fit the bill also.

Another consideration is that the fee for a couple at a regular training class goes up quite a bit since you're doubling everything versus one person. Just some things to consider. Most any training class will be enjoyable and help you both with your journey.

            Happy shooting and be safe!

              Talk with Wesley at LFI

He is a good, calm , easy environment but safe! He works at the Sac Valley Range which is the best place to shoot.

I have been through about half dozen trainings with him. Will continue to go.

If you want to train locally, I recommend John Daniels at http://www.defenseshot.com/

I recently took an advanced class from him, really enjoyed the instruction and his style. He has a private range in the foothills.

Is that how it is in the bay area? That has not been my experience at all. But then again, I usually talk to the instructor before signing up, and we decide which class best suits my needs.

In the course descriptions that I have read on the respective websites. It listed that you had to take their Beginner course before taking the advanced.

Besides my PM check to see which trainers in Sac qualify for CCW training. Sac County is a will issue county. Most of the LGS have a list of Sac CCW trainers.

I've taken a MAG class hosted by these guys: https://www.lfiguns.com/courses

I can't comment on the courses they run themselves, but they ran a safe range during the class I took.

The training you'll be looking for really depends on your level of knowledge. Please don't skip out on the basic class if you have not already taken it.

'Basic' for handgun classes usually means "no holsters".
