Mailing long guns to nephew?

Okay, here is the situation. My nephew is going to college in North Dakota. He has a place arranged to store his firearms off campus. He left his firearms here in California (his state of residence) while he is at school, but would like them sent to him. Can we mail/send his own firearms directly to him? Or does this require us to mail them to an FFL on his end?

he can mail them to himself long guns only. He should have travelled with them. Contact shipmygun and they can give you answers. looks like he screwed up by not taking care of this before he left. Poor planning.

If they are the newly defined AW, once he takes them out of state he cannot bring them back in.

It is a shotgun and a deer rifle. And he did not screw this up before he left, as he had no arrangements in place for the storage of firearms off campus at that point. It was not poor planning. It was simply the reality of the situation. And I would appreciate it if you stuck to answering the question instead of making moral judgements when you don't know what is going on.

Only he can ship the firearms to himself.

If anyone else ships the firearms, then they will need to ship them to a FFL dealer, who will then transfer them to him.

He can visit here and take them back or visit and ship to himself. He should have checked before he left. If he sets up residency you can ship to ffl using shipmyguns or usps..

As stated above, probably best to come home for a visit (I would fly); then bring them back with him in an airline approved locking case.

You can only ship firearms to yourself. You do not have to own those firearms to ship them to yourself. I have sent borrowed hunting rifles from TN to CO when I did not want to risk them being lost/stolen in transit. I would send them to friends or in a tight spot, the hotel where I was staying. NO ONE but the addressee (you) can open the box.

Interestingly enough my stepdad just sent a 22 Henry rifle (that I own) out here so he would have something to shoot when he visits. I cannot open the box to get my own gun without violating Federal law. Neat right?

I wonder if he sends a notarized power of attorney that empowers you to ship his firearms to him will pass muster. One of the closet ac's here should respond.

I think that that may be over-complicating things. I will just find an FFL there to ship them too. Not that big of a deal. Outside of CA, FFLs don't usually charge an arm and a leg for receiving firearms. Thanks for all of the clarification.
