    Building an AK

Can I purchase a complete lower? I have a AK Magpul Folding stock and hand guard.

What are some of the better complete lowers? I have built an ar10 so I'm hoping this is similar.

Yes, you can purchase (4473/DROS/10 day wait) an AK receiver.
It will be DROS'd as a "long gun".

AK style firearms do not have a separate upper or lower receiver, they just have one receiver.

Building an AK style firearm is more difficult that building an AR15/10 style firearm.
On a scale of 1-10, an AR style firearm is a 1 and an AK style firearm is a 7.

Plus, you will need a parts kit of some type that has to be matched to the receiver, i.e. a RPK uses a thicker receiver and has a different contour to the front trunnion. Most kits don't come with barrels, so you will need one of those too.

Also you are going to need a few hundred dollars in tooling to install the gas block, front sight base and barrel into the trunnion. And, of course a decent press to do the pushing along with a set of riveting bucks to set the rivets.

In other words, they are most definitely not a simple plug and play deal like a AR. Do your self a favor, go buy a complete rifle and barbie it up from there. In the long run it will be a bunch cheaper.

Do some research, you know, get out on Google and type in something like "how to build an AK". Go on You Tube and look at the many videos on building AK's. While you are out there on the web, find out what all the various bits and pieces will cost to build one.

Plan on buying a minimum of $500 in tools to build one.

I understand it's not cheap nor easy. I built my AR-10 which cost around $2200 without a scope and I probably couldn't get $1500 for it. I don't plan on selling it, it's mine, i built it. I would like to do the same with an AK. Just curious what type of AK I should build, and good receivers. I can do 80% (have the machinery) or a complete. I do have a Magpul folding, collapse stock. Depending on my overall look is whether I'll use it. Any help would be appreciated.

                  Thanks

Nodak Spud as previously mentioned for a drosed receiver.
                      Or
Buy a hardened 80% blank and drill your own holes.
                      Or
Bend a flat, drill holes, and have it hardened.

Buy a original barreled "stamped" receiver parts kit.

Demill the parts kit and build onto your new receiver.

Join an AK specific site and read to your hearts content.

                      Lather, rinse, and repeat.
