AR Scope vs Hunting Scope for .450 Bushmaster

I was reading that I should put a AR Scope on my .450 vs a Hunting Scope. My uncle works at Nikon so I can get half off. I was thinking a Monarch 5 but after a little research wondering if I should put a AR Scope on it.

It is up to you. I put a hunting type scope on my AR15 toy and it works just fine and I only use it at the range. If you plan to hunt with the 450 then I would put a good Duplex reticle scope on it with no adj-AO. I would put a Leupold on it myself but if you like another brand use it.
If it is just a range toy then almost any type scope will work.

Thank for the reply Diver! I live in Michigan and am going to hunt with it. I would love to put a Leupold Scope on it but with my uncles half off discount on Nikon it's hard to turn down.

One article I was reading the guy said the recoil had knocked the Scope off zero. Not sure on what kind of scope it was but recoil will have no effect on a decent scope?

I have a 450 bushmaster with a monarch 1x4 on it. Dead on at 100 is like 9" low at 200 yards so no need for a high magnification. Plus shots in Michigan usually aren't long (used to live there).

Diver - Can you clarify on adj-AO? Sorry about my lack of knowledge on this subject.

Lew - You are correct, don't often shoot over 100 yards.

you do realize that the standard hornady 250grain ammo is a flat trajectory for 200yds average right??

also the recoil is not that bad either on scope if you properly tighten mounts
i just shot 60rds through my 16in 450 and have a ncstar markIII scope on it ,at 100 and 200yds i had zero issue and was a devastating naildriver.

i previously owned a 20in 450

I use a Nikon p223 fixed 3x32 carbine scope on my 450 semi and a 3-9 on my bolt action bushmaster. I like low magnification on both.

Adjustable Objective lens(the front one)--Just another thing to have to adjust before you make the shot. Same goes for "side focus") scopes. I like the Kiss principle in my hunting rifles. I get on game faster and can still take killing long range shots. My scopes on hunting rifles have no AO lens or side focus as neither are needed. I have shot(plenty) game from 3 feet(yes) to over 600 yards(also yes) and never needed all the adjustments or fancy reticles. Just a simple duplex with the rifle sighted in 2.75" at 100 yards.

I do have a fancy reticle in both my high dollar Nightforce NXS scopes on my two 50BMG rifles which are a help when shooting 1000 yards to 1400+ yards. But I would NEVER try to shoot game at those ranges. I have more respect for the game I am hunting than to try that......except ground squirrels/PD

The big problem with cheaper scopes---besides falling apart from recoil.........or out of the box----is fogging/falling apart while hunting due to weather or being bounced around and often not noticed until you try to take a shot at a big animal. This does not happen to Leupolds. I have about 18 of them, my family has another dozen and I have a bunch of friends with them. Been using them since the late 1960's and never a problem. I have seen far too many other brands with problems including ones I have put on my fun guns. One BSA that was given to me took 4 trips back to the factory(at $10 plus shipping) to get one that I could even install! Broken right out of the factory sealed box. BSA stands for Back Slowly Away. I could of put a Redfield(made by Leupold now) on it for what I have in that POS.............But it became a game to me after the 2nd time. Plus something I could bring up when talking about scopes. Barska and NCSTAR are not any better except the one scope stitchnicklas has ----But consider he only has 60 rounds thru his and probably at the range in good weather. That would be 1 maybe 2 trips to the range for me plus I would want to be able to trust it to go hunting.

If you get a Nikon just do not get a lower level Nikon scope. Midrange or better would be my suggestion---just like any other brand for hunting.
