Picked up a M1 Carbine today

Bought this Carbine off a friend which just purchased a tractor and his wife made him sell it. Ended up getting it for $600. It's an Inland receiver/barrel (2-44)/stock(IO in sling well, double stamped acceptance stamp)mag catch/hammer/gas piston/slide/recoil plate/trigger housing. Has a type II National post meter hand guard. Rear sight is Winchester. Not quite sure on the front sight, "N" marked on it. I believe it's a type I Inland, NPM, IBM or QH.

That war relic looks to be in great condition. The first thing I would do is completely detail strip her down and look for rust.

Great price at $600, especially with that stock.

Type 3 rear sight was made by Hemphill Co. and is an update/upgrade. Front sight was made by Niedner Rifle Corp. and is likely original.
        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Thanks! He was happy with $650 and I was also! Not quite complete part wise but I'll leave it together for now.

Thanks !!!! How did you identify those parts? I have M1 Carbine wartime production but I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

                  Years of study.

The best source of information like that is in the back issues of the Carbine Club newsletter http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/Carbine_Club.html There is information in those newsletters that hasn't been published elsewhere. You can buy the complete set of back issues but they are expensive. They are great for hardcore M1 Carbine collectors but if you just have a few questions you can ask in the CMP forum http://forums.thecmp.org/forumdisplay.php?f=6 or the Carbine Club forum http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/

Nice! Could you fill me in a little more on this front sight? Also the barrel slot would be type II?

I'm not sure what else there is to say about the front sight. Niedner Rifle Corp. made front sights for several prime contractors including Inland, IBM, National Postal Meter, Standard Products, and QHMC.

I don't know what you mean by barrel slot. If you mean barrel band it is a Type II or it could be a cutdown Type III. If the front of the inner band is flush with the front of the outer band it is probably a cutdown Type III http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=92709

Your magazine catch if genuine was made by White Sewing Machine Co. for Inland. You have the original style pushbutton safety that might or might not be genuine.

The problem is that original M1 Carbines are valuable so there are some fakers out there putting reproduction parts on M1 Carbines to make them more valuable. There is a notorious seller in Central California who has a bottomless supply of "correct" M1 Carbine parts (they are fake) that he sells on Ebay and Gunbroker. There is a seller on Gunbroker.com who has a bottomless supply of "correct" M1 Carbines. The most common reproduction (fake) parts are the earlier type parts that were replaced when the carbines went through arsenal upgrades/rebuilds after World War II: flip rear sights, Type I barrel bands, pushbutton safeties, and magazine catches. And stocks with fake cartouches.

Thanks Milsurp! I know exactly who your talking about. I had bought a stock from him a few years back. Sent it back the same day.

Where would I find this information that was made by White Sewing Machine Co?
