In putting on a 1911 Armorer class this week I had a chance to discuss this gun a little more with its owner and our history together: the pistol, him, and me. Him shooting it way beyond any life cycle expectations and me helping to keep it running. He feels the 150K round count estimate is way low and so do I, but there was more than a decade and a half of shooting it where no thought was given to keeping an accurate round count. So given that, and that I don't think the "suspected' round count would be taken as credible by some, I'll stick to the 150K number.

But we determined that the current barrel is indeed at least the third, possibly the fourth.

This one gets shot a lot too but is still relatively new. Deputy Kim's Kimber. She and the owner of the above pistol have been pushing the pistol distance limit for a long time, but have been getting a little more scientific about it lately. This will be an interesting pistol to track in terms of wear, breakage and accuracy since she's only been running it a couple years and is good at keeping a pretty close round count.

Kim won the competition this year at the National Patrol Rifle Conference. Not high woman, she flat out won the whole thing.

Good to see guns that get used.

But your lack of cleaning the Noveski comp has a lot to be desired.
a little PMC. And it could of been serviceable till you just plain wore it out.

Well.... some of these guys are so busy shooting they don't take a lot of time for maintenance-- they know what it takes to keep the gun running and some of them don't really dote on them beyond that. Me I'm a bit of a maintenance enthusiast but-- a great many of my friends, customers, and associates, they just "aren't".

No clean, shoot. Gun stop working? Clean gun. Now shoot gun. No clean, shoot. Gun stop working? Clean gun.

Repeat.

OK, that might be a slight exaggeration.

At the point where I took off that KX3, the barrel was also shot out. I was offered many suggestions after the fact that I could have soaked it in this or that to get it apart and maybe some of it would have worked. But between having another KX3 close at hand but not a lot of time, lessons learned, and I think an interesting conversation starter, it was the thing to do. Most people won't see many guns shot to a worn-out condition, shot to a malfunction-inducing level of cruddiness, shot to destruction......

Barrel pic from today from a Springfield Operator whose career I've been following. I think I probably mentioned this gun in one fo the previous "high mileage" threads:

Rob tells me 6,600 rounds fired since last I examined it.



Going back through previous posts and trying to get totals, I think that 6600 makes it 118,000 on the gun and 46,000 on this barrel....? And 15,000 on the new slide.

There really wasn't anything else picture-worthy today. The slide / frame fit continues to hold up well due to the original fitting (recently with new slide, (also well-fitted). There is a lot of contact / bearing area which is conducive to long life on this fit.

The one in posts #1 and #11 will be coming back soon for a another new barrel and it sounds as if the owner is ready to go ahead with a new slide for it too. It is long overdue but the owner hates to let loose of it for work and I understand that. The hope is to find an appropriate Colt 70 Series slide for it. This will be a good time to get it to the laser welder, between that and the new slide this gun will have a new, long unseen, rattle-free fit.
