Not pointing this out cuz I'm proud or anything.... I have violent felonies with hatecrime enhancements all as a minor...it has not effected my adult gun buying.

To be safe and to avoid embarrassment have him fill out and complete this process:

That will definitively answer whether he'll have an issue in a way that only costs a couple of bucks and some time.

Convicted, sentenced and did my time...I do remember my dad pressing the issue with my lawyer that he wanted to make sure I was not banned from owning firearms as an adult...One of the crimes I speak of even involved a firearm.
