It's illegal (felony) to install a folding stock on an AR Pistol.
Doing so violates Federal and CA laws.

Because of how CA SBR/SBS laws are written, any of the 58 DAs Offices can classify an arm stabilizing brace to be a shoulder stock.
Which means installation of one on a handgun, can cause the handgun to be classified as a SBR/SBS under CA laws.

Does it matter if the gun can be fired with brace ("stock") folded or not?

On AR Pistols with something like a Law Tactical adapter, the gun is clearly marked such that it is not designed to be fired with the buffer tube folded.

I should have been clearer .. Take for instance a Sig 556 where it can fire folded

As long as you're using a brace and not a stock, then you can use a folding adapter like the Law Tactical. It's illegal when you put a actual stock or you start shouldering the brace.

Based on what Quiet was saying, it seems the CA DAs/DOJ have the legal leeway to define any ATF-classified arm brace as a "shoulder stock" if they deem fit under CA law. Don't we just love how our State flaunts Federal mandates?

The problem isn't the Law Tactical Folding Stock adapter itself, it's the fact that arm braces can be classified as a "stock" in CA, which turns an equipped AR pistol into a SBR under CA laws.

Quiet, please comment if I'm interpreting this wrong.

That subject was just discussed two weeks ago here:

Basically no defined answer. Federal law is perfectly legal, on CA DAs may interpret how they deem.

Not designed to be fired, and certainly would not operate as a semi-auto, but you would be able to get a single shot off if chambered and then folded.

Contrast to the SU26 California model that moves the break point to the front of the action, separating the trigger group from the chamber and rendering it impossible to fire even once.
