    Ever Use A Friend's/Stranger's Reloads?

Have you ever used/had a problem with somebody else's reloads?

I was shooting with a few Border Patrol friends the other day after their qualifying shoot.

My son works at - what I think is the best - a San Diego Indoor range [ San Diego American Shooting Center ]. While we were shooting some of the off duty 1911's, one of the fellas gave another a handfull of his reloads. Within a minute or so, a Kimber flew out of the hand of it's owner. Seems like one of the reloads released the 'Magic Genie of BLAM'!

Chainfired a round in the magazine doing some undertermined damage to it, as well, and cracked the (expensive) grips.

The Kimber owner swore, "Never again!"

Sorry for the bad photos - I had to use my cellphone camera.

A classic double charge of fast powder. It ignites the next round down in the magazine, blows the magazine out of the pistol, cracks the grips and makes a lot of smoke. Sometimes it gives you the red burn lines on your palm from the hot gasses.

Only VERY trusted friends and even then very rarely. Your pictures are why.

Glad no one was seriously hurt. Is the gun fixable?
        Please, calm down.

+1 on only trusted firends ammo and even then I don't use their pistol reloads. Its easy to double charge a pistol rounds esp a 45acp case. You can't really double charge most rifle rounds. Another reason I use a single stage press.

Only from a very few select friends that I trust.

Once in a while I'll rent a handgun from my usual indoor range (Insight in Artesia), and their rules are that you have to shoot their ammo in the rentals.

Last time out I rented a .44 Mag and they didn't have any factory ammo available, only reloads, which I bought and used.

After getting more than a few fireballs out of the muzzle, one round squibbed, leaving the bullet sticking out of the muzzle. I was able to remove the bullet myself, because it was barely in there, and when I emptied the shells from the cylinder I saw that one of the .44 cases had an empty .22LR shell in it!

I checked the shells and all of them were bulged around the case head. (It was my first time shooting a .44 Mag in a few years so I was thinking the fireballs were normal.) Needless to say, I won't be touching their reloads with a stolen arm.

                Hmm

I always use a powder that will not permit a double charge. Powder overflowing is a good indication of a problem.

You have to pay attention. Just like driving, just like shooting, just like taking medication. Reloading is fantastic, I use a Dillon 550. It works like a charm. I load 45ACP and 357 magnum. I am able to tailor my loads to particular firearms that I shoot. You definitely need to respect what you are doing, and not use ammo that you don't know who or what the source is. If some stranger handed you a pill and said take this, would you? My friends and I went to Burro Canyon on Saturday and shot several hundred rounds of my hand loads (45ACP: 200gr SWC, 6.0gr Bullseye, win brass, Fed 150 primers/357: 158gr FP, 10.7gr Blue Dot, Starline brass, Win WSPM) . My S&W 627 and my Wilson CQB love those things, and very accurate. I load a minimum of 2000 rounds a month. I have loaded thousands upon thousands of rounds, never a problem. I suggest you know your source intimately. When I load, I focus, no distractions. I love it. My hand loads are far superior to any of the range ammo that most people shoot. Sorry for being long winded but I am passionate about loading.

No, I generally dont shoot ammo that is reloaded unless i completely trust the source..
