Having to buy a lock with transfer

I've noticed some shops make me buy one of those cheap red gun locks and others just do the safe affidavit, which I obviously prefer.

Is having a gun lock a requirement when leaving store? What gets me is I'll bring the lock I bought a month ago to do transfer and they won't allow it unless I have the receipt that proves it was bought in the last 10 days? I'm starting to think this FFL is nickel and diming me for whatever they can shake me down for..

Handgun requires a lock per CA rules, but I thought it was 30 days.

You have to have a receipt dated within the last 30 days to go with your lock. At 31 days the metal apparently fatigues and the lock becomes worthless, unless you are using it in your home..... Some dealers don't understand the safe affidavit and a lock is safer, in their opinion, related to DOJ inspections I would guess

Thank you! It was a rifle I was transferring, an AK at that matter where the lock really doesn't work unless you remove the mag which is another can of worms , so rifles are just affidavit?

I'm not going to name them until I confirm what is supposed to happen, I have another transfer of another rifle coming up and I'll challenge them then. If they push their lame policy again I'll drop the name. They're usually pretty cool but I think the issue is w this newer employee

I'll go ahead and name one; 95% of the time Hunter Supply in Monterey has made buyers purchase a lock for a PPT. This happened for both rifles and handguns (I was the seller every time) in which the firearm always included the factory lock.

The 1 time when a lock purchase wasn't necessary was when I was the buyer oddly enough

I did a PPT for a lever gun and transferred it at Ammo bros Cerritos, then another at Turners Torrance, no issues.
Safe affadavit is ok with the Feds., but not CA for handgun.
Librarian should be here soon to validate.
Then he will say "asked and answered" and close the thread.

Just don't forget about the "shipped on" and "charged on" dates, they might look at you weird if you ordered it after it had already shipped.

This has happened once so far at this FFL but I've experienced this in the past at other FFLs, it just sucks because I have like 9 of these things and I never really looked into what the law was. I think what you're inferring in your closing statement confirms what I suspected, I was screwed outta 8 bucks.

And to add insult to injury, my purchase had also been a PPT.

Other FFL's I've been to have never required the purchase of their own lock. I've been able to use my own lock and a safe affidavit.

For handguns, I always bring my Hornady tripoint lockbox and everyone accepts it.

Don't new guns come with a lock from the manufacturer?
