    Hot Lead... ohhhh yeah.

In the San Diego Reader 1/22/09 edition, someone asked Matt Alice of "Straight from the Hip" fame what the temperature of a just-fired bullet is.

The newest way to measure the temp of a fired bullet is by using a thermographically calibrated infrared camera to read the electromagnetic radiation from the missile. Complicated software converts the infrared picture into temperature data. A 5.56mm round shot from an AR-15 automatic rifle clocked in at 267 degrees Celsius, 512.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

this is so funny i was thinking this exact question as i was casting bullets today

i was thinking of the apu quote "oh the searing kiss of hot lead"

hmm i guess that is a foot from the muzzle?

i wonder how hot it is when it hits 100 yards away also

this goes along with a question ive never gotten an answer too

so the sr-71 gets red hot from air friction but there is a wind chill factor from the weatherman that makes the temp feel cooler with a bit of wind

my question is at what speed does air stop having a cooling effect and starts to have a warming effect?

The wind chill is due to increased evaporation making you feel colder. Actually any wind technically causes heat due to the collision of the air molecules with your body, the same thing that causes the heat on an SR71 or the space shuttle on re-entry.

It's not really friction that heats up the exterior of a supersonic aircraft, but the compression of the air in front of it. Basically for subsonic applications the compressive heating is negligible, but at Mach 3+ there is a LOT of compression occurring. The wind chill is caused by the air acting as a heat transfer mechanism.

yea with time dialation and the magic stopwatches and flash superheros out there they better be wearing gloves when they redirect those time stopped bullets
