Going to the costa messa gun show sunday looking for a scope. Usually their is a large table run buy two ladies with many scopes for sale.Forgot what brand they sell but advice please. It is going on a savage in 223. 90 % of my shooting will be 100 yards with 69 year old eyes. I was told not to get real fancy .

IMHO go to a shop and look at some name brands like Nikon, Bushnell, Burris, Vortex, Leupold, Weaver, etc. Stay away from the gun show no-names, almost as a rule they will give you problems. I agree with don't get anything fancy, but don't read that as cheap. Get something with decent glass. Older eyes need good glass.

Some people will recommend spending big bucks on a scope. Good advice, if you have it. For normal people and uses, I think start looking in the $150 range, and work up from there.

.223 at 100 yards? Look at a 2-7 or a 3-9 with a regular duplex reticle. Target knobs are nice, but not needed, ditto with adjustable optics (AO) and ballistic or mil-dot reticles. Also look at the scope's weight. Its nuts to mount a 1.5+ pound scope on a 7 pound rifle. I have an excellent Burris 2-7x35 Fullfield E1 (mounted on a .223) that comes in at 12 oz., and also a fantastic 11.5 oz Leupold 3-9x40 VX2. Basic Weaver and Leupold scopes in the 2-7 same power range are lighter.

    Hope this helps. Good luck

I have a Nikon Prostaff 3X9 on a .223 bolt gun. I shoot at 100 yards and I never take the scope off of 9X.

9X may be your minimum so maybe 9 X 12.

I did get a 6X Weaver for the mini 14 and found this to be great but older eyes need all the help they can get.

Another shooter put a 24X on his rifle and he doesn't need a spotting scope.

If you shoot indoors you need lots of light so big lenses are important at least 38mm.

I don't go expensive on optics. Both the Prostaff and Weaver Classic 6X38 allow me to target shoot reasonably well

+1 on NO gun show scopes, my story is sad indeed, also you'll get no bargains there on glass, unless it has issues IMO.

Can you get lucky, sure but not likely. IMO

I got lucky with a $30 6x "sniper" scope from our friends in Communist China. Works great for .22LR.

As an upper 60s yr old shooter myself. Who has worn glasses since age 9/10.

Who quit finding "deals" at gunshows long ago. You can do better from your keyboard, than a show.

Check out the offerings at SWFA and OpticsPlanet. If you are looking for "decent" glass at reasonable price point, you might consider the "Simmons" line of optics. .223 in a full size bolt gun is going to be real easy on recoil.

I have several Simmons Scopes on .22lr and smaller caliber CF rifles [.223/.243] etc. I'm satisfied that I got more value than I paid for.

Look in the deals forum and there are always scopes on sale at one vendor or another. You can get a suitable Vortex for under $150. There are no good deals left at gun shows and has been like that for the past 10 years or even longer.
Now, if you are looking for beef jerky and jewelry, gun shows are the place to go to.

I was at Costa Mesa show today, probably a bazillion Chinese knock off scopes for sale.

Now if you are looking for jerky or jewelry, you're in luck.
                Then said He unto them...
"and he that hath no 1911 designed by my servant John Moses Browning,
let him sell his garment and buy one."
And they said, "Lord, behold, here are two Glocks."
And He said unto them, "Meh, it's a good start."

                Luke 22:36-38 (somewhat paraphrased)

I put a Redfield Revolution 2 - 7x on my Marlin 30-30. Same reason, eyes going to crap. I think it was $130 on a good sale.

Here's a Cabelas scope on sale for $75. It's about as cheap as I'd go.

Realize that most scopes under a hundred bucks are garbage.

Leupold, Redfield, Vortex, Burris, Bushnell, Weaver, SWFA, and a few others all have reasonably priced budget scopes that aren't trash and priced between $150 and $300. Some people like Millet(designs are idiotic and basically unusable, things like turrets and such), Mueller(I've put one on a .22, wouldn't put it on anything else), tasco(every time i've handled one it seems like it's about to fall apart). Leatherwood, Falcon, and Hawke I've read decent things about, but have no experience with them.

Buying from no-name vendors at a gun show is terrible for 2 reasons.

1: The number of counterfeit optics you see there is amazing. It's not as if that $100 "trijicon" will even work half as well. It's a $10 junk optic, and the seller is ripping you off.

2: The random chinese optics sold by people who aren't trying to rip you off aren't any better. They're still junk, and every now and then we get someone on calguns praising their $65 chinese airsoft scope and complaining that people are speaking negatively about it, then 2 weeks later it's broken, they have a look through a much better optic(within that price range I mentioned above), or they just remain silent and it eventually gets replaced to end up in the trash can.

It might be junk, but you are getting a good price for that junk. They have lifetime warranties, and, and, and....

Notabiker, you are thinking of Eagle Eye Optics, I believe. Chinese imports.

You will be happy with a good quality 3-9x or 4-12x. Burris FFII, Vortex Diamondback, or a Nikon.

I have Burrises, and a Vortex, like them both.

I buy from Midway, Grafs, Natchez, or OpticsPlanet. Their prices are very good, as is their customer service.
