Refinishing old/tired magazines?

Guys,

Cosmetically speaking, what's the best way of refinishing steel magazines? No rust, just some missing paint here and there. How are they usually "painted" in the factory? Is it some kind of a chemical application or simply a coat of paint? How could one approximate original finish?

I'm referring to Eastern Bloc stuff.

Park then paint. I like DuraCoat.
