Sacramento Area Shooting Ranges

To all those who shoot around the Sacramento area, where do you go? I've only been to the Elk Grove Gun Room, and shot with friends on thier private land. I was curious about the Cordova Shooting Center or the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. Anyone been to either one of these? I'm trying to find a place to shoot an AR15 once I finish building it up. Thanks!

Cordova Shooting Center is barely ok IMO. It's a 100 yard rifle/25 yard pistol range. They also have trap/skeet. I used to go there years ago, but felt it just got too unsafe at times. A friend was shooting with a guy who went down range to set a new target, came back to the line, and 2 of his rifles were gone From what I hear lately there are a lot of bangers. I do not know that first hand. But it is close to Sac.

The Sacramento Valley Shooting Center is FAR better IMO. But then I'm biased. I shoot there almost every weekend, and I've been a member for a number of years. For the public they have a 50 yard pistol range, a 100 yard rifle range, a 25 yard .22 RIMFIRE ONLY metallic silhouette range (that's fun), and a 300 yard rifle range. (they now have a rule that if you are a first time shooter there, before using the 300 yard range, you must "qualify" on the 100 yard range. All that means is putting 10 rounds in the black at 100 yards. This was done because too many target stands were being destroyed on the 300 yard range) The rifle ranges have concrete benches and chairs. Wood benches for the pistol side. If you are a member you also have access to the member only ranges, which include the action pistol bays, the 500 meter metallic silhouette range, and if you qualify the 1000 yard range.

They also have shotgun stuff if you're into that.

SVSC is AR/AK friendly. The range officers are pretty low key as long as you follow safe gun handling and range rules. They do not allow bump/rapid fire on the public ranges, but you can get away with double taps if you pause between pairs.

Some people say it's too far, but from Sunrise and Hwy 50 it's only about 20-25 minutes. http://www.sacvalley.org/

A hint: All shooters get 1 target free with entry fee - which btw is a flat rate for as long you're there. Not hourly - extra targets are either $.25 or $.50 depending on the target. BUT, you can buy 10 pistol target repair centers for $1.00. They don't advertise that, you just have to ask for them. I use 'em on the rifle side too.

From what I hear lately there are a lot of bangers. I do not know that first hand.

There are enough stupid gang banger wannabes there that I simply stopped going. The final time I was there I was shooting next to some guy in a T-Shirt long enough to be a night gown who had his shorts around his ankles! He must have fired his Glock about 50 times, taking pictures of himself and his gun with his cell phone as he shot. He hit the target about 5 times. He left without even putting up a fresh target for the next shooter !

OK now that I'm done venting... even though it's not in Sacramento proper, I think the best public range near Sac is the Yolo Sportsmans Association. They have DCM shoots, cowboy action shoots, trap, and the works. Of course obviously the best places to shoot are BLM land but not everyone has the time or a BLM spot to shoot at.

I shoot at Cordova. It's OK. I don't live too far away so it's worth it for me to go when time is limited. I don't remember seeing too many "gang bangers" though but I ussually go on Wed. or Thur. evenings or Sunday morning. Maybe the "gang bangers" are not awake at those times.

The range it self is old school and appears/ is run down. They have been doing some clean up lately. There are 10 min shooting sessions with about 5 min breaks in between to check or change your target. There are range masters who actual look over the shooters or "gang bangers" if they are there. Some may see this as a negative. Not like the indoor range folks who have their backs turned to the shooters. I am not trying to church up Cordova as it is what is. It's a place to shoot. If you want a nice gun club range with pretty benches this won't be for you. I do see quite a few people out there shooting OLL's and I know for a fact one of the range masters owns one. So I would say it is OLL friendly as I never had any problems shooting mine there.

Also the store has very competitive gun prices. Some of the best I have seen in the area. If you know about Wild Sports prices which are ussually very good, these guys ussually have the same prices if not better. Also If I remember correctly you do not have to wait 11 days like some stores make you i.e Wild Sports.

The other places I have shot is at the gun club in Lincoln which is very nice and at the Gun Room. I have a friend who is a member at Yolo and he has been asking me to go out there but I really have not had the time. Does anyone know if the are OLL friendly?

Bottom line is I like to support all shooting ranges as they probably won't be around forever especially Cordova because of all of the new home development out there. Go there and see for yourself.

Yolo County Sportsmen

Yolo County Sportsmen is a great range. 25, 50, 100 yard ranges. Shotgun sports ranges, cowboy shoots, archery range, fishing pond for kids, ect. They are located in Woodland, about 30 minutes from me in Antelope. Also try Lincoln Gun Club. Wish we had more indoor ranges like the Gun Room. Jeff is a great guy....

Cordova can be a....well....interesting time. Lots of dumb asses. As stated, it is run down. As a correction, I am pretty sure the pistol ranges are 15 yards fixed. The rifle ranges are 100 and 25, even though the web site states they have 50. Also, there is no standing or prone, but as far as rifles go, it is the only place near me.

There is an indoor range just behind the River City Gun Exchange. 5 rounds max, fixed range, honestly, it is for rim fire. People with center fire get rude looks. They do some target competitions there, but I don't know the times

The Gun Room. Best place to shoot if you like indoors.

El Dorado Gun club. Shot some three gun there. Has funny hours for the public though.

There is a range open to the public up in Lincon too. Never been there. Can't comment on it.

Then there is the national forest. Call the ranger's station for info.

Sac Valley is an awesome range. I highly recommend becoming a member at that range.

As far as the Range behind River City Gun Exchange I have spent countless hours there shooting rimfire and centerfire. Everyone has always been kind to me.

I miss Brandon's. The people were nice (to me) and the range was fairly big. Usually not too crowded. Rumored that they also sold Class 3 to law enforcement, although I never got to see the safe itself.

I shoot at Yolo and have for several year with both my Fab10 and my OLL and no one has every said anything or even looked at me. I was asked to lock back the bolt on my CAAK when it was in the rack but no worries there.

Its also very inexpensive for a membership and fees $45 for the year/family + $1 per visit w/2 targets for the day. Trap, Skeet, Archery, 7 and 25 yard, then 50 and 100.
