This just happened, uninvited visitor last night

This literally just happened few hours ago.

My bedroom is on the 2nd level with a small balcony right outside. At approx 330am this morning, at my dog start to barking hard, this sometimes happens when he sees small animal outside, and I usually ignore him, but this time, I got a feeling that something is not normal.

I had my Kahr PW9 locked in a small pistol lock right besides my bed, I went to open it, grab my gun, then literally in less than 5 seconds, I hear a loud thud, then I see a shadow of a man landed on my balcony. I instantly pointed my gun on him, told him to freeze, what are you doing here.

He was sweating and breathing hard, and was being very incoherent in his speech, I cannot get any answer out of him at all, I dialed 911, told them my address, and explain the situation, in less than 5 minutes police show up, they were gun drawn, walk up to my bedroom very slowly, handcuffed him, and as usual, police cannot get any answer out of him, he was being very incoherent in his speech,

I didn't realize at the time, but later police told me he was probably high on some substance.

Not in a million years I would expect something like this to happen to me, but when it did, I'm glad I'm a gun owner and I keep it cool, and I'm also very glad that everything worked out in the end that no one got hurt. I now, also have a new appreciation for police officers. And I hope the young man got the help that he needs.

Even though everything turn out to be fine in the end, there are still some lessons I learned, I realize that its really hard to see and hit the keypad at total darkness, I incorrectly enter my key twice before I was able to open it, so this is something that I will be practicing from now on.

Also looking back, I should have keep my distance from the intruder a bit more, because he was in reaching distance of me the whole time and might have tried to make a jump at me.

Anyway, stay safe out there, protect your family.

Did you tell police dispatch you had a gun? Did they give you any directions regarding the firearm?

Thanks guys, I'm glad it turn out good overall, I did tell the 911 dispatch that I am pointing a firearm at him, and I actually didn't receive any further instructions from them about it.

But as the police was going up the stairs, I made sure that I tell them that I'm up here and I'm pointing firearm at the intruder, as soon as I know the polices are behind me and can see me, I slowly put down the gun on the ground, it was really no problem after that.

Hey man, glad it turned out ok. Got a few questions, just to "put us in the moment" a bit more if you don't mind.

You say the guy was incoherent in his speech. By this, do you mean nonsense syllables seemingly randomly put together such as "abu idka didda wabuhan, gabba loita makt jagu..." Or was it clearly recognizable words, but put together randomly like "Or his zoom girraffe water cow bad sky run...". Or was it actual sentences that just didn't have any context, or weren't complete enough to make any sense of, like "Hey man, you know, I love the sky... marbles, they're blue, you know... I can't find any, is there help for a man? We don't like the floor... ammonia, they clean the floors with it..."

And what was his behavior like? Was it like he was in a completely different orbit, like you weren't even there? walking around the room, looking at the ceiling, pointing at random stuff you can't see, picking up something off the floor and just staring at it? Or was it like he was making eye contact with you, seeming to understand what you were saying... did he put his hands up when you drew a weapon, did he get on the floor face down, was he responding to your instructions and to the police when they showed up? Was there any actual hostile behavior, threatening/intimidating, or did he just seem lost & confused? Did he resist the cops in any way, verbally or physically, when they escorted him off premises?

The cops were probably right, strung out on something, didn't know where he was really or what he was doing.

Good that you did the after action review, and identified a few points that need work. Even better that you didn't go all trigger-happy like some gun nuts would, "Hey, an intruder broke into my house, I was in fear for my life..." and only used the amount of force necessary to halt the threat and bring about a successful outcome. A lot of guys would brag online about being the big hero, "taking a bad guy off the streets, permanently" and getting everything right. Kudos to you for just spelling it out the way it happened, we can all take a page from your book and learn from your experience.

For the over prepared, Massad Ayoob spoke about having a set of house keys attached to an orange tennis ball in the bedroom

When you call 911, stay on with dispatch

When officers are at your home, you can tell the 911 operator you are tossing down an orange tennis ball with the front door keys...

No need to have your front door booted
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Glad you are okay and did not have to shoot anyone.

There are always lessons to be learned and now you will be better prepared. Perhaps you need a small flashlight next to your keypad to see better.

In coherent as I ask him, who are you, what are you doing here, he just says... no.. no... danger.. help.. danger... machine guns... bad guys...

I feel like he was trying to tell me he was in danger, but it really make no sense.

He was not acting physically threatening towards me as soon as he saw the gun, but he avoided looking at me or make eye contact with me (after I turn on the lights).

I didn't give him instruction to lay down on the ground or anything, also he didn't move much because I box him from entering the room from the balcony, but he slowly entered later on and set on my bed, by which point I told him not to move, which he complied that he didn't move much. (I might have to burn the sheets)

Oh yeah, for some weird reason, he picked up one of my dumbbells from the balcony and start to exercise with it.

When the police come, they quickly judge that he didn't have any weapons on him, and they kinda of push him onto my bed, turned him belly down, and hand cuff him from behind, and of course, they were asking him the same question that I was asking.... they didn't have much success just as I did.

Then police pulled out his pants pockets, there was some scrap papers, his wallets, they took out his ID, few other officer took him out and one officer left behind to take photos of my room.
