How do Olympic air rifle targets work?

They're not paper, right? How do they record and measure hits so precisely?

    Here's one method(video included) http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...ry-and-beyond/

With some setups you can even have empty frames along the projectile path and get the location of the bullet without having to disrupt it with paper or anything. Here's another video with a range with an electronic target system(photo-electric) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdn6oYae52I

I was very happy that we took the Gold, however it was pretty boring to watch.

      Just being honest.

I would rather watch the "real thing".

Nothing to be ashamed of, who the hell wants to watch a shooting match?

On the other hand, it is mind-boggling to me that people actually sit in front of the tube to watch golf.

How about the fact that NBC televised both bike races in their entirety? Who the **** wants to watch 6 hours of bicycling?? Why can't they show something good, like table tennis, or judo?

You watch the highlights, not how long they can remain at a standstill.

Yea, I saw the listing it said "shooting" and recorded it. Air rifle.

What's with the heavy leather clothing they have to wear ?

                  Are the rifles C02?

They must be pretty powerful of they have to wear that kind of gear.

Shooting jackets are for support, not protection. And those would be high pressure air, not CO2.

Yup as Merc Said, the jackets are designed to tighten and clench against your body to prevent movement and twitching as you hold the rifle. From what i've read on the subject, you ideally want to isolate as much muscle movement as possible, to rest as much of the rifle on your skeletal structure and do as much as possible to make yourself a human statue as you can.

Yup, it is the same as when shooting Small Bore rifle...just with the difficulty taken to a power of 5.

I used to shoot Small Bore for my High School (in San Francisco) and the standing (Freestyle) position is really tough to maintain. You rest the elbow of your support hand on your support side hip, then you have to lean backwards (sideways) to bring the sights level with the target.

The really difficult part is the follow through as the pellet takes a while to travel the length of the barrel

Pretty good discussion. I too would have liked to watch some judo. I watched taekwondo last year and it was not as cool as you would expect. Full gear, keeping no closer or further than elbow to elbow distance to block each other's kicks and exchanging weak punches to the chest plate. It's like tying two roosters together and watching them bump into each other so neither one can get off a strong strike.

The judo isn't going to be anymore action packed either. Here's the men's >100kg final from 2012, and it's 4 minutes into the match before anything other than grabbing eachother's gi and trying to get leverage happens, with the win coming from points at the end of the clock.

Now I'm not knocking the skill involved, either of those guys would toss me around like a ragdoll. But that's what formal competitive martial arts are, rather than MMA/UFC type stuff which is closer to WWE than anything.

The same goes for olympic(and even a lot of non-olympic) shooting matches that involve static positions. Lots of skill, boring for spectators, and you're never going to see 3-gun or something similar in the olympics.

Anyone who's expecting any of the combative events to be truly exciting is in for a rude surprise. This isn't MMA, it's not made for Hollywood drama, and there won't be any ring girls. These are athletes at the top of their game training with the best trainers they can find to attempt to the most effective techniques at scoring a point (not disabling an opponent), which nearly always translates to small and subtle movements that technically score a point. Unless you are involved in these sports watching them on TV won't be that interesting.

When I fenced competitively two of my favorite targets where the knee and the hand since you could attack both without telegraphing your commitment for one or the other since the difference in which target you were aiming for came down to a last second wrist flick. It's not exciting, but it's effective.

I think wrestling and weight lifting are some of the more exciting summer olympic sports. Trap is entertaining for short periods of time as well.
