Weird call from the ATF today.

So this lady calls saying shes from the atf and she has some questions for me regarding a firearm that I may have been involved with transacting. She went on to state that it was used in a crime and asked if I have kept all my records to date and if I could give her info regarding it.

She then proceeds to give the brand/model and serial number to check. I tell her my records are not with me at the moment and the transaction occurred before I was even born. She tells me to please check anyway(?) and to call her back when I can.

Ive only had a type 3 ffl (now expired)and told her I was sure I had never sold or bought the gun in question. Anyone else get a funky call like this. Is it legal for them to give out the serial like that? She insisted I write it down.

Wouldn't calls like this be pretty routine for any attempts to trace a gun used in a crime?

It might be more profitable for you to post this in the FFL subforum, or have one of the mods move it.

Especially with all the phone scams around, that sounds best, have it in writing even if it's legit, especially if it's a legal issue.

Or you could just call her back and say, "OK, I checked. There is absolutely nothing regarding that firearm in my bound book."
"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

Naw, that is too simple and logical.

Ask her if you were being detained.

Ask to speak to her supervisor or tell her you need to call her back in five minutes and ask for a phone number. Look up number on google.

Did she have an Indian accent? I get phone scam calls at least once a week from someone claiming to be from the irs and I have a warrant for my arrest if I don't pay the fees.

Check your book and get back to her. Don't play games. Call the ATF and ask if its real or not if you dont trust it.

Not sure if you read the above but it was transacted before I was born and I dont need to check my book if I'm sure I never dealt with the gun. I think id remember selling or buying a colt 1911 in 9mm. Regardless I am getting back to her tomorrow.

Well, you might not remember if the sale occurred before you were born...
