    Cleaning .223 with BoseSnake?

    Howdy-

    I have a 5.56/.223. I have picked up a BoreSnake in .223/.22. I have never used a BoreSnake.

I dropped in the brass weighted end. Carefully pulled the snake into the barrel (from chamber end) and started to pull. At this point there is no solvent or lube on the snake <insert lube your snake joke here>. As the "cleaning brush" area getting into the barrel it will not budge. I even put a little weight into it. Nothing. Not moving, not flossing, not snaking. I had to wrap it around my hand and yank the crap out of it to back it out of the chamber end again.

I have verified that it is a .22 cal.

What the heck? I love the BoreSnake idea! Any help?

I usually stand on the end with the brass weighted end and then pull the upper of the AR up. Yes it will have resistance.

I would recommend running "wet patches" and a copper brush down the barrel until the patches come out clean, then use the bore snake.

Now run a wet patch with a little oil on it down the barrel and you are good to go.

When you go to shoot the rifle again, shoot 1 round to get the oil out and then you can start your grouping/shooting if that is your thing.

Resistance is entirely normal, however try this method.

You should solvent the part right before and after the brush(its fatter after
the brush for that reason). I also use a little oil further back on the snake
so in effect, you solvent to soften then brush, solvent to clean then oil.

They work very well, I use one on my .223 and 308.

It should have resistance, but not so much that you can't pull it through. If that is the case I am thinking the boresnake is marked incorrectly and is the wrong size.

This is why I love this place...real advise.

I am going to give it another go. I have triple checked and the snake is marked "22". It sure seems like A LOT of resistance.

I always put a lube on the brush. Then put some muscle into it.

I've noticed that the first group or two shot after using the snake are about twice the normal groups. After that, the groups shrink right back down.

The first few times with the snake are the worst, it just needs to get broken in. Spray some Breakfree CLP down the barrel, and pull real hard on that bore snake until it gets in. And yeah, you might have to stand on it, so don't hit your face when the resistance slackens.

It is perfectly normal to have to wrap your hand around the boresnake to pull it through. It also takes up some of the slack so the snake isn't stretching as much. Also, I use CLP and it seems to do a great job of cleaning and oiling the barrel.

That's known as a good tight brush. Normal. Put your CLP of choice on the bristles or right in front of the bristles.

I have several for all my long rifles. I even have a smaller homemade one that I tie patches to and run through several times. It works great and will clean the the barrel relativel quickly.
                        Good luck
